Department: School of Communication Time Type: Part time FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Job Description: Summary: The Investigative Reporting Workshop is seeking a student graphic designer for the Fall 2026 semester. IRW is an editorially independent, nonprofit newsroom based at American University's School of Communication. Applicants should be undergraduate majors or minors in journalism or graphic design or related fields. Candidates should be design-focused with an understanding of design for journalism, including data visualization and web design through WordPress, as well as design for communications. IRW is a learning environment, so applicants of varying skill levels are welcome. We will teach you how to use new tools and develop web production skills to help with our news site. This position does not have a Federal WorkStudy (FWS) Award. Essential Functions: Design and web production. Informational graphic design and development for stories. Social media development. Design related to posters for events, swag, or other marketing efforts, including fundraising campaigns, and office needs, such as letterhead. Competencies: Acquiring and Analyzing Information. Making Accurate Judgments and Decisions. Prioritizing and Organizing. Displaying Creativity. Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: Part-time. 10 hours per week. Salary Range: $22.50 per hour. Required Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. Less than 1 year of relevant experience. Preferred Education and Experience: 1 - 3 years of relevant experience.
