Ecology Assistant (52 Weeks) - AmeriCorps Position ID: 4506 Position Title: Ecology Assistant - AmeriCorps Program: Scientists in Parks, Stewards Individual Placements Location: National Capital Region Network, Washington, District of Columbia Number of positions: 1 Terms of Service Duration: 52 Weeks (not flexible) Flexible start date: Yes Start Date: 02/01/2027 End Date: 01/31/2028 AmeriCorps hours: 1700 hours minimum for the selected candidate Benefits Segal AmeriCorps Education Award: $7,395.00 upon successful completion (pre‑tax) Weekly Living Allowance: $775.00 per week, fixed rate (pre‑tax) Relocation Allowance: $450.00 (one‑time lump sum with first paycheck) (pre‑tax) Student Loan Forbearance (if applicable) Student Loan Interest Payments (if applicable) For 52‑week positions only: Free Healthcare Coverage (opt‑in) Childcare Coverage (opt‑in) Purpose The Ecology Assistant will contribute by creating data products related to Inventory and Monitoring program data. Responsibilities include enhancing data visualization, developing data capture tools, performing QA/QC, and supporting timely reporting to parks and stakeholders. The assistant will aid long‑term monitoring of natural resource vital signs and provide data essential for informing management decisions in the National Capital Area parks and across the NCRN. Responsibilities Collaborate with Natural Resource and Science staff on natural resource management and monitoring projects across National Parks in the National Capital Region and other National Parks in the eastern US. Develop data products such as dashboards, reports, and visualizers; analyze data using R, Python, and other programming languages. Create data capture tools, conduct mapping, and perform spatial analysis with ArcGIS Pro, AGOL, Survey123, Field Maps, etc. Collaborate closely with Inventory and Monitoring staff to compile deliverables and upload completed products to the appropriate storage warehouse. Assist field crews in forest vegetation and water quality monitoring, collecting data for trees, shrubs, vines, herbaceous plants, and water parameters (temperature, conductivity, pH, discharge). Engage in QA/QC and analysis of current and legacy data. Document processes and best practices related to data capture, analysis, and field monitoring. Deliverables Data capture tools (Microsoft Forms, Survey123, Field Maps) and analysis scripts. Automated dashboards and summary reports of field data collection. Field data, photos, and maps collected during monitoring activities. Qualifications United States citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident. High‑school diploma or equivalency certificate (or agreement to obtain one before receiving the education award). Ability to provide required eligibility information and complete National Service Criminal History Check and host‑site security background check before starting. Availability for the entire 52‑week term. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of GIS and ability to create, edit, and publish GIS data in ArcGIS Pro and AGOL. Experience with Microsoft 365 applications such as MS Access and Excel. Familiarity with Python and/or R. Field skills: Comfort with challenging field conditions, strong teamwork and communication, attention to detail, commitment to safety. Experience with botanical research, forest vegetation monitoring, and/or invasive plant management. Time Requirements Full‑time service each week, schedule may vary by project. Lunch breaks and days off are not counted toward AmeriCorps hours. Participation in national, state, or local service projects or events may be required. Orientation and Training Receive ongoing project and site training. Orientation covering AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities. Access to free professional development webinars offered by Conservation Legacy staff. Evaluation and Reporting Requirements Performance evaluated on completion of required AmeriCorps hours and satisfactory assignment completion.
