Light Rail Systems Maintenance Technician

Salary range is $21.63/hour to $64.42/hour with a midpoint of $42.31/hour. New hires typically receive between minimum and midpoint, however, we may go slightly higher based on experience, internal equity and market. Retirement Plans: 401a 10% of employee contribution with a 12% match by Sound Transit; 457b up to IRS maximum (employee only contribution). Paid Time Off: Employees accrue 25 days of paid time off annually with increases at four, eight and twelve years of service. Employees at the director level and up accrue additional days. We also observe 12 paid holidays and provide up to 2 paid floating holidays and up to 2 paid volunteer days per year. Parental Leave: 12 weeks of parental leave for new parents. Pet Insurance discount ORCA Card: All full-time employees will receive an ORCA card at no cost. Tuition Reimbursement: Sound Transit will pay up to $5,000 annually for approved tuition expenses. GENERAL PURPOSE: The responsibility of this classification includes independently performing - under general supervision - skilled electrical/electronic and mechanical work to diagnose, maintain, repair, rebuild, overhaul, service, inspect light rail vehicles (LRVs) and equipment and their electronic systems; he/she also performs testing and repair of communications systems, surveillance equipment, and other related equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties are a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical Maintenance and Repair, or closely related field. Four years of experience in performing repair and maintenance of light/heavy equipment, troubleshooting electrical systems, and performing equipment inspections, preferably with light rail vehicles and equipment; Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Demands/Requirements: This position is considered safety sensitive. It requires a DOT physical that meets standard to qualify for at least a one-year certification under 49 CFR 391.4, and recertification as needed, and a negative drug test. Following is a description of the circumstances for testing as required by Federal regulations 49 CFR Part 655: random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing in compliance with Federal Transit Authority DOT alcohol and controlled substances testing program protocols. Required Licenses or Certifications: Valid state driver's license (with no more than 1 violation in the past 12 months, exclusive of DUI and reckless driving). This position is required to have DOT clearance. Valid Washington State CDL class B commercial license or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire. Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) or Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Certification.

Required Knowledge and Skills: Work independently and unsupervised for extended periods of time. Operations, services, and activities of a light rail vehicle maintenance and repair program. Current methods, equipment, tools, and materials used in the repair, maintenance, and adjustment of light rail vehicles and associated systems, such as shop tools, power tools, lathes, milling machines, presses, diagnostic and test equipment, forklift trucks, non-revenue vehicles, specialty vehicles to include lifting platforms and buckets. Methods and techniques of performing preventive maintenance including preventive maintenance inspections, performing diagnostic troubleshooting services. Principles of electrical, mechanical, and electronic theory. Methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in fabrication work. Basic shop mathematics. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices. Principles and procedures of record keeping. Principles of business letter writing and basic report preparation. English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Modern office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and statistical databases. Utilizing personal computer software programs affecting assigned work and in compiling and preparing spreadsheets and reports. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other department staff, management, vendors, outside agencies, community groups, and the public. Interpreting and administering policies and procedures enough to administer, discuss, resolve, and explain them to staff and other constituencies. Performing a variety of mechanical work in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing light rail vehicles and their systems. Accurately diagnosing mechanical and electrical repair needs. Operating a variety of mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner. Performing various welding and fabrication duties and knowledge in shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), flux cored arc welding (FCAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW) and tungsten inert gas (TIG) processes. Performing safety inspections and identifying safety hazards. Conducting accident/incident prevention and investigation. Interpreting and using all types of operating and repair manuals related to a light rail system. Interpreting and applying applicable federal, state, and local policies, laws, and regulations. Maintaining repair and maintenance records. Responding to inquiries and effective oral and written communication. Applying project management techniques and principles. Working cooperatively with other departments, Agency officials, and outside agencies.

Physical Demands / Work Environment: Work is performed in a hybrid, field, shop, warehouse, and office environment. Positions working in field may occasionally be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, physical harm, hazardous chemicals, and/or extreme noise. This position is responsible for maintaining light rail vehicles and bringing along tools and parts. May be subject to bending, climbing, crawling, eye/hand coordination, grasping, hearing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, reaching, repetitive motion, sitting, standing, talking, seeing, walking, and carrying and lifting up to 50 pounds. This position requires on call availability, including nights and weekend, as events arise unexpectedly.
