Job Title: QC Analytical Chemist Job Description
This QC Analytical Chemist role focuses on testing and releasing raw materials used in manufacturing within a regulated GMP environment. You will perform a variety of wet chemistry and analytical tests on incoming materials, support documentation and method activities, and gradually expand into HPLC and GC work as you grow in the role. The position offers strong training, exposure to diverse instrumentation, and clear opportunities for internal advancement across multiple quality and development teams.
Responsibilities- Test incoming raw materials in accordance with USP, EP, and internal specifications before they are released for manufacturing use.
- Perform wet chemistry testing such as pH measurements, infrared (IR) analysis, moisture determination, identification (ID) tests, titrations, and other routine QC analyses.
- Work under GMP regulations and follow established quality control procedures, methods, and documentation requirements.
- Accurately document all test results, calculations, observations, and deviations in laboratory notebooks, electronic systems, and controlled forms.
- Assist in drafting, reviewing, and updating analytical protocols, test methods, and related documentation as experience increases.
- Train on and progressively perform HPLC and GC analyses for raw materials, adapting methods based on the type of material received.
- Support method validation and method transfer activities under guidance from senior chemists or supervisors.
- Perform basic testing and routine QC tasks during initial training to build proficiency in laboratory techniques and procedures.
- Take on side tasks and supporting activities, such as maintaining laboratory supplies, preparing reagents and standards, and organizing work areas, to ensure continuous productivity.
- Collaborate with other chemists on the Raw Materials team and, as experience grows, cross-train with the Finished Product team on particle size testing, dissolution testing, and other finished product analyses.
- Contribute to Analytical Development activities as needed, supporting new or improved methods and processes.
- Identify and communicate any out-of-specification results, unusual observations, or potential issues promptly and follow appropriate investigation procedures.
- Work proactively by seeking additional tasks when primary work is complete, demonstrating initiative and ownership of responsibilities.
- Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance laboratory efficiency and quality.
- Adhere to all safety, quality, and compliance policies while working primarily in the laboratory and transitioning responsibilities as the team and role evolve.
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or a related life science field.
- Completion of analytical chemistry coursework during undergraduate studies.
- Undergraduate research experience or summer internship experience in a chemistry or related laboratory, demonstrating initiative beyond classroom work, or 0–2 years of chemistry experience in a GMP environment.
- Foundational knowledge of wet chemistry techniques, including pH measurement, titration, moisture analysis, and identification tests.
- Ability to work in a GMP-regulated quality control laboratory and follow standard operating procedures and regulatory guidelines.
- Strong documentation skills with attention to detail and accuracy in recording data and maintaining records.
- Self-driven work style with demonstrated initiative to find and complete work independently.
- Ability to work effectively in small teams and collaborate with other chemists and quality professionals.
- Willingness and ability to learn and apply new analytical techniques and instrumentation, including HPLC and GC.
- Hands-on experience with HPLC is a plus.
- Hands-on experience with GC is a plus.
- Experience with method validation and method transfer activities is beneficial.
- Prior experience in quality control testing, including QC testing of raw materials or finished products, is advantageous.
- Familiarity with IR spectroscopy and other instrumental techniques used in wet chemistry and analytical testing.
- Experience working in a laboratory development or analytical development environment.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and adapt to a varied workload across different test types and projects.
- Interest in career growth into lead, supervisory, or cross-functional roles such as formulations or quality assurance.
You will work primarily in a modern quality control laboratory that operates under GMP regulations. The Raw Materials team consists of approximately four chemists, with additional teams in Finished Products, Analytical Development, Environmental Monitoring, and QC Specialists, each typically comprising four to five chemists per supervisor. The lab has expanded over the last two years and features a contemporary, shared workspace design. Chemists work about 90% of their time in the lab initially, with the potential to transition to around 70% lab work after two to three years as responsibilities broaden. All chemists use laptops and work in shared spaces rather than having individual desks, while scientist-level staff have dedicated desks. The environment emphasizes variety in daily work, exposure to multiple instruments and techniques (including wet chemistry, HPLC, GC, particle size testing, and dissolution testing), and collaboration in smaller teams. The organization promotes from within, offering clear pathways to lead, supervisory, or cross-functional roles. Full-time employees accrue paid time off starting from their date of hire, with a structured accrual schedule that increases with years of service, and PTO can be used as soon as it is accrued, subject to approval. The role includes eight paid holidays and a bonus program that provides a $2,000 bonus over the first year of employment, with payments at nine and twelve months, contributing to an attractive and supportive work environment focused on development and long-term growth.
