Lab Manager

Dr. Research Unit at UCSF is looking for a highly motivated lab manager in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy. The position will expand management skills and provide experience in drug development and laboratory operations. The Laboratory Manager will oversee a complex research laboratory used by both ACTG and CFAR, providing analytical support for multiple UCSF Principal Investigators and developing specialized assays for quantification of drugs in body fluid specimens and tissues. Responsibilities Plan, manage and develop laboratory operations and implement new technologies. Serve as supervisor for analytical personnel and handle human resource management of laboratory staff. Act as liaison between investigators, study coordinators, and laboratory staff from multiple sites. Ensure compliance with UCSF, county, state, and federal regulations, maintain good laboratory practices, and meet quality control and assurance specifications. Maintain records required by UCSF EH&S, CDC Import permits, and chemical inventories and authorizations. Coordinate shipping and receipt of protocol samples, approve analytical results and report to investigators. Determine needs for new analytical procedures, establish timelines, and schedule project workloads. Oversee equipment maintenance and certification, and communicate professionally at meetings and conference calls. Train personnel in Lab Data Management System (LDMS) and oversee use of equipment. Assist director in determining budgets for sample analysis and laboratory participation in CPQA program. Serve as point person for IT-related issues. Supervise and schedule support staff, plan work for research fellows and students, and provide training and orientation. Promote staff professional training, and develop career development plans. Participate in recruitment, performance evaluations, and disciplinary issues as part of staff management. Promote laboratory safety and ensure proper procedures are followed. Provide financial and operational justification for hiring changes. Oversee inventory planning and purchasing, monitor expenditures, and approve laboratory orders. Negotiate equipment purchase and maintenance agreements. Assist in budgeting research projects and analytical services and finalize budgets for grant submissions. Lead research projects or instructional designs, develop new methods, validate methods according to FDA guidelines, and write SOPs and assay validation reports. Oversee quantitative chemical analysis of antiviral, malaria, tuberculosis, or other drugs using HPLC or LC-MS/MS methods. Qualifications BA/BS in a related science and 3+ years directly related work experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to interact productively with lab and campus personnel. Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively and work under deadlines with general guidance. Excellent organizational and planning skills to accurately complete detailed work. Basic knowledge of laboratory practices and safety. General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications. Team player.
