Summary The Miami VA Healthcare System's Mental Health Service is seeking an experienced and dynamic Physician (Psychiatry). You must be an excellent communicator, team player, and adaptable to the needs of a growing medical center. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the basic requirements listed below and any additional requirements (if applicable) in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the previous qualification standards at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements. Basic Requirements United States citizenship (Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy) Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from a VA-approved school Current, full and unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia Residency training in psychiatry approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, leading to board‑certification eligibility Roles eligible as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) for residency programs or transitional training, provided they are fully licensed physicians and work on an intermittent basis under supervision Proficiency in spoken and written English Board certification in psychiatry Physical requirements: Must pass a pre‑employment physical examination and be capable of lifting up to 44 lbs, carrying objects up to 15 lbs, frequent reaching, use of fingers, hands, legs, walking & standing up to 8 hours, bending, climbing, and hearing whisper. The incumbent must be physically, emotionally and mentally stable to perform the duties without hazard. Position remains open until filled; applications accepted on a rolling basis. Eligible applicants are referred weekly until a selection is made. Eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP); submit EDRP application within four months of appointment. Compensation: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases; 50‑55 days of paid time off per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, possible 5 days CME absence); traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution. Insurance: Federal health, vision, dental, term life, long‑term care; many federal programs can be carried into retirement. Licensure: One full and unrestricted U.S. state or territory license; possible $1,000 annual CME reimbursement for full‑time board‑certified physicians. Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided. No employment contract and no restrictions on moonlighting; physician serves as primary provider of psychiatric care—examination, treatment, coordination of medical care with primary care provider, and referrals to other medical or mental health services. Supervise medical students, residents, and fellows; supervise trainees is part of the responsibility. Participate in quality improvement programs, including peer reviews, open and closed medical record reviews, and utilization reviews as assigned. Coordinate preventive health care needs according to VA guidelines and sound psychiatric practice. Maintain knowledge of VA patient‑care processes, policies, medical center and clinic procedures. Provide services in person, by phone, or via telemedicine to adult patients with mental, behavioral, substance use, or emotional disorders. Document responsibilities as patient’s mental‑health treatment coordinator when appropriate. Work schedule: Monday‑Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; schedules determined and approved by the supervisor.
