HVAC Service Technician

Position SummaryAn HVAC Technician 1 is the beginning to intermediate level trade helper who assists the experienced technician installing the work in the basic tasks of materials handling, jobsite housekeeping, tool and equipment maintenance, simple installations, and general labor. Primarily responsible for performing installs, repairs, and maintenance to a variety of equipment including refrigeration, air conditioning, electric motors, heating units, heat pumps, hermetic compressors, light commercial furnaces, boilers, burners, intake and exhaust fans, economizers, and humidifiers. This is a safety sensitive position.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesUnderstands basic refrigeration cycle to include identifying components in refrigeration circuit, understanding how each component works, diagnosing problems in the refrigeration circuit, using manifold gauge set, pressure/temperature chart and temperature measuring devices for routine maintenance and to troubleshoot. Understands refrigeration recovery, evacuation, and charging.Understands basic electron theory, how electricity travels, AC and DC currents, single phase and three phase circuits, and series and parallel circuits. Ability to read basic wiring diagrams. Understanding of Ohms Law. Ability to use multi-meters to read voltage, current and resistance values. Must be able to troubleshoot basic electrical circuits.Understands the process of treating air to simultaneously control its temperature, humidity, and distribution. Must be able to read and understand mechanical drawings.Understands basic heating cycle to include identifying components in heating system, understanding how each component works, diagnosing problems in the heating system using a gas pressure test and other devices for routine maintenance and to troubleshoot. Understands the theory of combustion and how it relates to combustible fuels such as gas and oil.Helps in securing, relocating, and organizing materials, small tools, and equipment from and back to appropriate storage areas.Keeps work area clean by collecting and disposing of scrap, excess materials, and refuse.Keeps materials and tools clean and organized in an orderly fashion.Must be able to install, troubleshoot and repair the following equipment:Refrigerant controls (metering devices)Hermetic compressorsHeat Pumps to 5-tonSplit systems to 5-tonPackaged units to 5-tonDuctless splitsElectric Motors (3-phase and 1-phase)Electric motor controls (contractors, starters, relays, disconnect, thermostats, etc.)Light commercial furnaces, boilers, burners, and related controls (oil and gas)Various types of water pumpsIntake and exhaust fansUnit heaters (hot water, steam and electric)EconomizersDetermine client needs in a professional and effective manner.Represents CEC Companies to the client by a clean and neat appearance on the job.Communicates with Service Manager on a frequent basis regarding scheduling and work in progress.Participates in meetings and trainings as assigned.Prepares written materials to document activities and log information as required by the job site or Company procedures.Provides assistance during emergencies to resolve immediate safety concerns, operating safetyOther Duties and ResponsibilitiesPerforms other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective processes, completion of projects and smooth operation of department.Education and ExperienceHigh school diploma, GED or equivalent.Must have an Apprentice License and EPA Certification and at least six (6) months of trade-related work experience, OR.Any similar combination of education and experience.Must have a high school diploma or equivalent GED certificate, high school diploma or equivalent.Required Skill, Knowledge, and AbilitiesDemonstrates basic understanding of English (ability to read, speak and write) while performing work-related tasks.Soldering, Brazing, Basic heat load calculations, and basic heat loss calculationsPractices and comprehends safe work procedures per Company policy.Meets deadlines and schedules with minimal errors.Must possess acceptable Motor Vehicle Record and drivers license.Must have excellent written communications skillsMust possess excellent time management skillsMust have excellent oral communications skillsMust have the ability to juggle multiple tasksMust be able to deal with difficult peopleMust have excellent organizational skillsMust be able to work well with other technicians and tradesmanWork EnvironmentThe work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Constantly move about on the feet.Climb ladders of all types.Complete full day assignments involving overhead work.Must be able to make transition from employee parking area or street into construction work areas and to access all levels of the building, even if the only means of access is by O.S.H.A. approved site construction ladder or stairs still under construction, but acceptable for use.Must be capable of securing tools and materials from storage areas to complete assigned tasks.Possess good vision, normal or corrected. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision to discern color coded wires, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.Possess good hearing, normal or corrected.Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, safety vest) at all times.Must be able to work 8 hours a day, 40 hours per week, and overtime as required and night shifts, as needed. This position requires flexible work hours.
