About the Position

Job Title: Surgical Technologist Profession: Surgical Tech Specialty: Operating Room Duration: 13 weeks Shift: First Shift Hours per Shift: 40 Experience: One year of experience as Scrub Tech or training License: BLS Certifications: One of the following is required: NBSTSA Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or NCCT Tech in Surgery Certified (TS-C) Must-Have: Completion of a CAAHEP or ABHES accredited Surgical Tech Program or completion of a Surgical Technologist Program in the United States Armed Forces. Description: The surgical technologist works under the direct supervision of a registered nurse in the operating room environment. Must possess strong clinical knowledge and skills regarding operating room procedures. Must be highly motivated and self-directed with a positive attitude and good communication skills. Willing to have flexible work schedules and duties, which will include ancillary duties such as cleaning rooms between cases, stocking room, and helping in the central sterile area. Must have a proven record to expedite room turnover, have good organizational skills, and an understanding of the importance of teamwork in a fast-paced environment. Job Responsibilities: Actively participates in the time-out procedure to ensure patient safety. Labels all solutions and medications with the name and strength of the drug before transferring to the sterile field. Counts according to policy with no deviations except in emergency situations. Follows policy for the safe handling of specimens, implants, and explants. Checks packaging or containers for integrity to promote aseptic technique. Displays knowledge of the surgical technologist role. Has knowledge of procedures and instrumentation and equipment needed for the procedure. Is scrubbed and in the room before the patient enters the room. Efficiently sets up for the procedure. Has knowledge of suture and supplies appropriate for the procedure. Maintains and protects the sterile field during the procedure. Demonstrates knowledge of sterile techniques in actions. Contributes to the department and entire operating room team by taking personal responsibility and accountability. Practices safe working habits by following policies on the safe use of safety items provided as personal protective equipment. Communicates effectively with other team members. Follows the chain of command. Corrects problems encountered when it is in the best interest of the patient and within control to correct. Completes required assignments and competencies on time. Is willing to precept and help peers and students when needed. Returns the room to a ready state at the end of the case. Utilizes free time to help others who are busy. Reports to the control desk as soon as realizing not assigned and asks what is needed. Helps with the cleaning and stocking of the room. Delivers care in a manner that impacts the entire healthcare environment. Opens sutures and supplies on an as-needed basis. Practices good care of instruments and equipment by using fluids and enzyme cleaner, returning instruments in trays and containers. Reports any broken or unusable instruments or equipment to the nurse leader. Reports any changes in resource maps to the nurse leader.
