Parks Maintenance Technician I

Job Information

Non-exempt (compensatory and/or overtime eligible); full-time; 40 hours per week; Monday - Friday; 6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.; full-benefits This position performs entry-level, labor-intensive work in support of the maintenance, upkeep, and improvement of County parks, grounds, and related facilities. This position assists with a variety of routine tasks, including grounds maintenance, landscaping, custodial services, minor repairs, and support for construction and seasonal operations such as snow removal and event setup. Work involves operating basic tools and equipment, maintaining park cleanliness and safety, and supporting higher-level technicians with assigned projects and daily maintenance activities. Supervision is received from a Park Maintenance Supervisor and/or Parks Maintenance Leader.

NOTE: The upper pay range reflects possible wage rates for internal County transfers and promotions, which are calculated per County policy. For external hires, offers are made at the base wage rate.

Essential Duties And Job Responsibilities

• Perform routine grounds maintenance including mowing, trimming, edging, and landscaping to maintain safe and aesthetically pleasing park environments
• Clean and maintain park facilities including restrooms, picnic shelters, playgrounds, and other public-use areas
• Assist with minor construction, repair, and maintenance activities such as painting, carpentry, and equipment installation
• Remove trash, debris, fallen trees, and hazardous materials from parks, trails, and surrounding areas
• Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and light to moderate equipment in a safe and effective manner
• Assist with tree care activities including trimming, removal, and brush clearing to support park safety and maintenance
• Support seasonal operations including snow removal, ice control, and event setup and breakdown
• Perform routine inspections of park grounds, facilities, and equipment to identify maintenance needs and safety concerns
• Load, unload, and transport materials, equipment, and supplies using trucks, trailers, and other assigned vehicles
• Follow established safety procedures and departmental guidelines while completing assigned maintenance and custodial tasks
• Participate in pesticide, herbicide, fertilizer, and related treatment activities as part of the County's required training program and only in accordance with applicable law, required training, documented authorization, and required supervision
• Operate a county vehicle
• Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications And Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Possession of a valid driver's license

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES: A successful incumbent operating in this role displays the following:

• Knowledge of general construction
• Knowledge of equipment used in the maintenance of park and county grounds
• Skilled in the use of hand and power tools
• Ability to follow directions and compete work in a timely manner
• Ability to perform a variety of maintenance tasks
• Ability to observe all safety protocols and procedures
• Ability to operate heavy equipment
• Ability to maintain County Authorized Driver privileges
• Ability to obtain a Class A CDL driver's license within one (1) year of start date

PREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN FOR :

• Park maintenance work experience
• Snow removal work experience
• High school graduation or the equivalent
• Landscaping or general construction experience

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS:

• While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly walk, and lift up to 20 pounds; and frequently lift up to and over 50 pounds, push up to and over 40 pounds, pull up to and over 40 pounds and drive
• While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly work outside, in a noisy environment, near machinery and with potential exposure to infectious diseases; frequently walk on uneven ground, in dirty/dusty environments, and protective equipment required; and occasionally work in hot temperatures (above 100 degrees) and cold temperatures (below 32 degrees), work at heights. and near chemicals/fumes
• Physical requirements include the ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods of time; use various types of hand tools and grounds maintenance equipment (string trimmer, edger, shovel/pick/mattock, tractor/hand lawn mower, etc.); and lift and/or move plantings and various pieces of equipment

Additional Information / Examination Process

• Employees in this classification are designated as Essential. An Essential Employee means the employee is considered necessary for the operation of County services. Essential Employees are required to report to work in the event of a weather incident, general emergency, or disasters when County offices are closed. They may be required to work overtime with little or no advance notice and may be required to report to work in emergency situations and/or after hours
• Available to work for Parks and Recreation at various County events, frequent weekend work or irregular hours as needed, and on-call for snow removal or other emergency situations
• Available for a minimum of three mandatory Parks and Recreation events
• Failure to meet or maintain the minimum qualifications or additional requirements may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination
