Job Summary:

The Community College of Rhode Island seeks an Assistant Professor of Sociology to teach General Sociology and one or more of the following courses: Criminology, Sociology of Deviance, Medical Sociology, Geography. The successful candidate will teach these courses in multiple modalities and on multiple campuses.

An advanced degree in Sociology with specialization in one or more of the areas listed above is required. Successful candidates will have a desire and demonstrated ability to work with undergraduate students from diverse cultures, disciplines, and academic backgrounds.

CCRI’s Social Sciences department comprises 14 full-time faculty members teaching Economics, History, Philosophy, Political Science, and Sociology. The successful candidate will join a dynamic, diverse, and collegial department, participate in curriculum development, and serve on departmental and college committees.

This appointment will begin in the Spring 2027 semester.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Instructional Skills:

  • Teach college transfer-level courses in Sociology

  • Maintain currency in subject content, technological advancements, and pedagogy within the discipline.

  • Demonstrate creativity and flexibility in pedagogical approaches to a diverse population of students and peers.

Course Management:

  • Use technology to enhance instruction, complete administrative tasks, and communicate effectively with the students and the campus community.

  • Create assessments that evaluate student learning outcomes.

Curriculum Development:

  • Use a student-focused approach to create meaningful educational experiences.

Departmental Support:

  • Participation in college and departmental activities, including committee work, assessment and development of new course modalities.

  • Willingness to travel to multiple campus locations as required by department needs.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Sociology.

  • Three semesters of recent instruction at the college level.

  • Experience teaching Introductory Sociology and one or more of the specialty courses listed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate in Sociology.

  • Experience teaching at a community college.

  • Demonstrated ability to teach in multiple modalities, including face-to-face, hybrid, online, and seven-week formats.

  • Experience with curriculum development, student learning outcomes, and effective assessments.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

  • Evidence of a collaborative approach in working both effectively and professionally with students and colleagues.

  • Knowledge of learning management software (LMS), such as Blackboard Ultra, or related programs.

  • Knowledge of a second language.
