Job Description

The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled general trades work associated with maintenance and repair of city buildings, equipment, and related facilities within the Utility Department.

Essential functions include performing general remodeling, repair, and maintenance work on city buildings, equipment, and related facilities; ensuring that remodeling work, maintenance work, and operation of buildings, equipment, and systems are in compliance with applicable laws and regulations; planning/coordinating remodeling projects; inspecting existing buildings, reviewing layout of proposed projects, and making calculations to determine necessary work and materials; scheduling work; inspecting completed projects/work; conducting remodeling and larger repair/maintenance projects and performing associated tasks; performing various electrical, plumbing, and painting tasks; performing various welding work; performing various general/manual work tasks associated with department projects; operating a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools; performing general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment and tools in operable condition; following safety procedures, utilizing safety equipment, and monitoring work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; inspecting/testing machinery, equipment, and parts for proper operations; making adjustments, repairs or replacements; reporting problem situations; communicating via telephone and/or two-way radio; providing information and assistance; taking and relaying messages; responding to requests for service or assistance; communicating with supervisor, employees, other departments, vendors, contractors, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems; maintaining a current knowledge of applicable laws/regulations; maintaining an awareness of new trends and advances in the profession; reading professional literature; attending workshops and training sessions as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or valid equivalent; and
• Three (3) years experience in building construction, remodeling, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, building maintenance, and/or roofing; and
• Possess (or obtain within fourteen (14) days of hire) and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's license.

Effectively communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, contractors, engineers, companies, vendors, outside agencies, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. Accurately and expeditiously receives and delivers messages and information to the appropriate individuals. Ability to prepare accurate and thorough written records and reports. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to complete assigned tasks with minimal supervisory direction. Ability to understand and quickly and accurately follow brief oral and written instructions on moderately complex matters.
