Our team works directly with equipment operators, project managers, surveyors, and construction companies to install, maintain, troubleshoot, and support the technology they rely on in the field.

Position Overview

Dirt Prep Solutions is seeking a skilled and dependable Field Machine Control / GPS Technician to install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot machine control and GPS systems on heavy construction and earthmoving equipment.

This is a hands-on field position that combines mechanical work, electrical troubleshooting, computer technology, and customer service. The technician will travel to customer job sites, equipment yards, mines, quarries, and other active construction environments to complete installations, diagnose equipment issues, perform repairs, and train customers on system operation.

The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined, comfortable working with electrical wiring and computer-based technology, and able to solve problems independently in changing field conditions. Direct experience with Leica Geosystems, machine control, GPS equipment, construction technology, or heavy equipment is strongly preferred but not required for a candidate with the right technical foundation and willingness to learn.

Compensation

$33.00–$45.00 per hour

Starting compensation will depend on relevant experience, technical knowledge, construction equipment experience, and familiarity with machine control or GPS technology.

Responsibilities

• Install, configure, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot Leica Geosystems machine control and GPS technology.

• Install machine control components on dozers, excavators, graders, compactors, skid steers, and other heavy construction equipment.

• Route and connect wiring, cables, sensors, antennas, displays, receivers, brackets, and related system components.

• Perform system setup, testing, calibration, and final quality checks to confirm proper operation.

• Diagnose and resolve electrical, mechanical, software, connectivity, and GPS-related issues.

• Use multimeters and other diagnostic tools to test voltage, current, continuity, wiring, connectors, and electrical components.

• Read and interpret electrical schematics, installation diagrams, equipment manuals, and technical instructions.

• Perform preventative maintenance, repairs, component replacements, and system updates.

• Troubleshoot issues involving sensors, wiring harnesses, displays, receivers, communication devices, and related hardware.

• Provide onsite technical support to equipment operators, field supervisors, project managers, and customer personnel.

• Train customers on the proper use, basic troubleshooting, and care of installed systems.

• Clearly explain technical issues and recommended solutions to customers with varying levels of technical experience.

• Document installations, service calls, repairs, equipment information, parts used, and outstanding customer needs.

• Maintain accurate records and communicate project status, scheduling issues, and technical concerns to management.

• Coordinate with Dirt Prep’s sales, data, technical support, and operations teams to resolve customer issues.

• Manage assigned tools, test equipment, replacement parts, cables, and installation materials.

• Maintain a clean, organized, and properly stocked company vehicle.

• Pick up or deliver equipment, parts, and materials when needed.

• Build strong customer relationships by providing dependable, professional, and responsive service.

• Work independently with limited supervision while meeting scheduling, safety, and quality expectations.

• Follow all Dirt Prep, customer, job-site, and equipment safety procedures.

• Travel to customer locations throughout Southern California and occasionally to other areas within Dirt Prep’s service territory.

• Work occasional early mornings, extended days, overnight travel, or weekends based on customer and project needs.

Qualifications

• Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort working on or around heavy equipment.

• Basic electrical knowledge, including wiring, connectors, voltage, continuity, grounding, and circuit troubleshooting.

• Ability to use multimeters, hand tools, power tools, electrical tools, and diagnostic equipment.

• Ability to read electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, installation instructions, and technical manuals.

• Computer skills, including email, Microsoft Office, internet-based applications, software installation, and hardware troubleshooting.

• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to diagnose issues systematically.

• Ability to work independently, manage changing priorities, and make sound decisions in the field.

• Strong verbal communication and customer-service skills.

• Ability to communicate professionally with equipment operators, field employees, managers, and business owners.

• Dependable attendance, punctuality, and follow-through.

• Commitment to maintaining a safe work environment.

• Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.

• Ability and willingness to frequently travel regularly to customer job sites.

Preferred Experience

• Experience with Leica Geosystems machine control, GPS, GNSS, site positioning, or surveying technology.

• Experience with Trimble, Topcon, or similar construction technology systems.

• Experience installing or repairing machine control systems on heavy equipment.

• Experience with construction equipment, hydraulics, electrical systems, sensors, or equipment wiring.

• Experience working as a field service technician, equipment technician, installer, mechanic, electrician, or construction technology specialist.

• Experience working around dozers, excavators, graders, compactors, skid steers, or similar equipment.

• Familiarity with construction plans, grading, surveying, coordinate systems, or 3D models.

• Experience providing customer training or technical support.

Education and Certifications

• High school diploma or GED required.

• Technical school, trade school, military technical training, or related certification preferred.

• Ability to obtain MSHA certification when required.

• Ability to complete customer-specific safety training, site orientation, and pit-driving requirements.

• Must be able to communicate effectively in English.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

• Ability to frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, crawl, and work in and around heavy equipment.

• Ability to climb onto construction equipment and access installation areas inside, underneath, or on top of machinery.

• Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.

• Ability to use hand tools and power tools for extended periods.

• Ability to work outdoors in heat, cold, wind, dust, rain, and other changing weather conditions.

• Ability to work around moving equipment, active construction operations, electrical systems, elevated work areas, and uneven terrain.

• Must wear required personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, high-visibility clothing, work boots, hearing protection, gloves, and hard hats when required.

• Must be able to safely drive between customer locations and transport tools, parts, and equipment.
