Job Title: Mechanic Helper / Mechanical Ship Repair Technician
Job Description

This hands-on role supports ship repair projects by performing mechanical maintenance, disassembly, cleaning, inspection preparation, and reassembly of shipboard mechanical systems. You will work aboard active vessels in an industrial shipyard environment, using hand and power tools daily to ensure equipment operates safely and reliably in accordance with shipyard safety and inspection standards.

Responsibilities

• Perform mechanical maintenance and repair tasks aboard ships in support of ongoing and upcoming ship repair projects.
• Disassemble low-temperature fresh water coolers by removing plates and gaskets, and prepare components for cleaning and inspection.
• Clean components of low-temperature fresh water coolers thoroughly to meet inspection and performance requirements.
• Reassemble low-temperature fresh water coolers, reinstall plates and gaskets, and ensure systems are properly sealed and ready for service.
• Replace nozzles on high-pressure air flasks using appropriate tools and procedures.
• Perform blue lining and boiler-related work, including opening boilers for access and inspection.
• Clean internal boiler components to prepare equipment for inspection and continued operation.
• Prepare mechanical equipment and systems for inspection by supervisors and inspectors in accordance with shipyard standards.
• Use hand tools and power tools daily, including extensive wrench-turning and other physical mechanical work.
• Follow all shipyard safety requirements, procedures, and inspection standards at all times.
• Work collaboratively with supervisors, inspectors, and shipyard personnel to ensure high-quality workmanship and adherence to project requirements.
• Operate effectively in an industrial shipyard and shipboard environment, including confined and elevated spaces as needed.

• Mechanical experience in ship repair, industrial maintenance, or heavy equipment (preferred but not strictly required).
• Ability to work safely and effectively aboard ships and in industrial environments.
• Proficiency using hand tools and power tools, including extensive wrench-turning.
• Comfort performing physically demanding work such as lifting, carrying, bending, and working in tight spaces.
• Familiarity with mechanical maintenance tasks such as disassembly, cleaning, inspection preparation, and reassembly.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, safety procedures, and inspection standards.
• Capability to work as part of a team with supervisors, inspectors, and other shipyard personnel.

• Previous experience working in ship repair is preferred but not required.
• Experience in industrial maintenance or heavy equipment repair is beneficial.
• Exposure to boiler-related work, including opening, cleaning, and preparing boilers for inspection, is an advantage.
• Familiarity with working on low-temperature fresh water coolers and high-pressure air systems is a plus.
• Strong attention to detail and quality when cleaning, inspecting, and reassembling mechanical systems.
• Willingness to learn shipyard-specific procedures and standards.

Work Environment

This position is based in a shipyard environment working aboard active vessels and within industrial facilities. The schedule runs Monday through Friday with a daytime shift ending at approximately 2:15 PM, and there is currently no overtime scheduled. You will work around heavy equipment, mechanical systems, and industrial machinery, using hand and power tools daily. The environment includes typical shipyard conditions such as noise, varying temperatures, confined spaces, and working at heights or in tight areas as required by shipboard work. You can expect a practical, safety-focused setting where appropriate work attire and personal protective equipment are required to perform tasks safely and effectively.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of North Charleston, SC.

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.
