The Mental Health Unit is a locked unit comprised of beds for inpatient psychiatry treatment. The patients in this unit carry various psychiatric diagnoses including depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, and cognitive impairment such as dementia. Many patients may be under involuntary and/or court ordered admissions.

Responsibilities include patient assessments, medication administration, interdisciplinary team coordination, admissions, discharges, internal and external transfers, delegating to assistive personnel, electronic medical record documentation, patient transport, withdrawal monitoring and management, and emergency response procedures. Knowledge in applying de-escalation techniques to help people manage their emotions and behavior is required. Evidence-based individual support, such as cognitive behavior therapy principles for depression and anxiety, is also part of the role. The position requires working 8- or 12-hour shifts, days, nights, weekdays, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications include completed courses for nursing from an accredited program approved by either the Commission for Education in Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. A current license in at least one state, territory, or commonwealth in the U.S. or the District of Columbia is required. A minimum of three years' direct patient care experience in the mental health/behavioral health specialty is necessary. BLS certification is also required.
