Associate Director, Engineering and Materials Science

Vertex Pharmaceuticals seeks an Associate Director in Engineering and Materials Science to lead cross-functional teams developing and scaling drug substance processes. The role combines technical oversight of small-molecule and oligonucleotide synthesis with strategic department contributions and mentorship of junior scientists.

Responsibilities

Lead cross-functional engineering and science teams in developing multi-step syntheses for active pharmaceutical ingredient manufacture
Direct drug substance process development from laboratory through technology transfer to manufacturing facilities
Collaborate with materials, chemistry, analytics, and formulation groups to optimize drug substance properties across development phases
Mentor junior scientists and contribute to departmental strategy as EMS leadership team member
Champion process modeling adoption and potentially lead cross-functional strategic initiatives

Requirements

BS in Chemical Engineering or related field with 11+ years pharmaceutical experience
MS degree with 9+ years or PhD with 6+ years in Chemical Engineering or closely related discipline
Expertise in small-molecule and oligonucleotide process development unit operations
Demonstrated experience coaching and mentoring junior-level scientists
Proficiency in process modeling, data analysis, and statistical design of experiments
Strong stakeholder communication and cross-functional team leadership skills
Ability to identify and resolve complex scale-up and process development challenges

Compensation: $169,600 - $254,400 base
