PACU Registered Nurse

Unit Overview

The PACU unit consists of 8 recovery beds and operates 24/7, catering to patients recovering from various surgical procedures. The unit also manages pre-certification processes with a designated area of 7 beds.

Qualifications

Current licensure as a registered nurse
BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification
NIHSS certification
PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification
Experience in acute recovery required
Ability to read and interpret EKG strips

Shifts and Call Requirements

Shifts are variable with 12-hour schedules during weekdays. Start times can range from 0500 to 0930. Call responsibilities include:

Approximately 5 weekend call shifts and 8 weeknight shifts per quarter
Weeknight call from 2200-0500 or 2200-0700
Weekend call shifts from 0700-1900 or 1900-0700

Unit Characteristics

Staffing ratios of 1:1 or 1:2 based on patient needs
No trauma services are offered; however, PACU may accommodate ICU patients when necessary
Access to IV Team, Respiratory Therapy, and Pharmacy on a 24/7 basis
No nurse aides present; charge nurse is available for support
Floating to other units may be required as necessary

Orientation and Training

New hires will receive 1 to 2 days of orientation in the PACU with a designated preceptor to ensure familiarity with unit protocols and procedures.

The unit treats a variety of cases including:

Total hip and knee replacements
General surgical procedures
da Vinci robotic surgery
Neurosurgery
Urological procedures

Additional Information

This position does not require a BSN for submission. The charting system utilized is Cerner.
