Job Summary

The Nurse Director, Hospital Maternal Child Health, will provide strategic and operational leadership for maternal and child health nursing services. This role is responsible for overseeing clinical operations, developing nursing teams, improving patient outcomes, maintaining regulatory compliance, and ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality care across assigned hospital units.

The Director will collaborate with physicians, clinical leaders, and multidisciplinary teams to establish best practices, optimize resource utilization, oversee budgets, and implement initiatives that support organizational goals and exceptional patient experiences.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for Maternal Child Health nursing services, including Labor and Delivery, Postpartum/Mother-Baby, and NICU services.

• Oversee daily operations across multiple clinical units in a 24/7 hospital environment, ensuring effective staffing, resource allocation, and continuity of care.

• Lead, mentor, and develop nursing managers and clinical teams while promoting professional growth, accountability, and high performance.

• Partner with physicians and multidisciplinary healthcare leaders to improve clinical outcomes, patient safety, and quality of care.

• Develop and implement nursing standards, clinical policies, and best practices aligned with regulatory requirements and organizational objectives.

• Monitor clinical performance metrics, identify opportunities for improvement, and implement strategies to enhance operational efficiency and patient satisfaction.

• Oversee departmental budgets, staffing plans, resource utilization, and financial performance.

• Ensure compliance with applicable state and federal regulations, the Nursing Practice Act, The Joint Commission standards, and other healthcare accreditation requirements.

• Maintain continuous survey readiness through audits, mock surveys, corrective action plans, and quality assurance initiatives.

• Lead patient safety initiatives, risk management activities, and investigations involving patient or family concerns.

• Direct strategic projects and operational improvement initiatives focused on quality, safety, affordability, and efficiency.

• Support emergency preparedness planning and ensure teams are trained to respond effectively to emergencies.

• Collaborate with nursing practice leaders to ensure staff competency, licensing compliance, and adherence to established clinical standards.

• Promote a culture of continuous improvement, teamwork, professional development, and patient-centered care.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN).

• Minimum of 7 years of experience in patient care delivery.

• Minimum of 7 years of experience in business operations, clinical healthcare, or a directly related field.

• Minimum of 2 years of experience managing operational or project budgets.

• Minimum of 2 years of leadership experience with direct reports.

• Active California Registered Nurse (RN) license required at the time of hire.

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required at the time of hire.

• Demonstrated experience in Labor and Delivery, Postpartum/Mother-Baby, and Level II or higher NICU environments.

• Director-level nursing leadership experience.

• Experience in project management, clinical operations, and team leadership.

• Experience with Magnet recognition, standards, or initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in Nursing.

• NE-BC or NEA-BC certification.

• Experience leading clinical quality improvement, patient safety, and operational excellence initiatives.

• Strong knowledge of healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, budgeting, staffing, and workforce development.
