Associate Director, Development and Outreach

Associate Director, Development and Outreach Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a full‑time Associate Director in the Los Angeles Office (Santa Monica) to lead fundraising and outreach initiatives for the Los Angeles area. The position reports to the Los Angeles Director and will be based in the Santa Monica office during peak season (approximately 8 months per year) with the option to work remotely 1‑3 days during slower periods. Evening and weekend events may be required. Responsibilities Partner with the Los Angeles Director to develop and implement the fundraising strategy. Represent HRW to existing and prospective supporters, maintain financial support by managing a donor portfolio, and solicit major gifts and general support funds. Research, identify, cultivate, service, and solicit new prospects, existing donors, and local Committee members to expand and diversify support. Supervise the Associate and City Director to oversee and lead fundraising, outreach, and cultivation events, including the annual Voices for Justice celebration, briefings, private dinners, and receptions. Oversee Committee communications and initiatives, including advocacy, outreach, and fundraising projects, in partnership with the Associate. Develop and implement a strategic plan for the Committee in conjunction with the Executive Committee. Coordinate with event consultants and manage Committee affairs. Process gifts and donor support services in Salesforce, including mailings, gift tracking, and acknowledgments. Maintain donor lists, fundraising reports, and office and event expenses. Lead fundraising‑specific team processes, including regular team meetings and prospect research. Mentor direct reports by setting expectations, providing constructive feedback, ensuring a balanced workload, and supporting professional growth and well‑being. Perform additional responsibilities as required. Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree in international relations, social sciences, communications/marketing, or equivalent work experience is required. Experience: Minimum of 7 years in donor management, philanthropy, or fundraising with demonstrated success in large‑scale event management. Commitment: Strong dedication to human rights and ability to represent HRW’s mission and programs. Creativity, initiative, follow‑through, and excellent organizational skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Ability to build donor and volunteer relationships. Strong interpersonal skills and a track record of effective teamwork (highly desirable). Effective multitasking, planning, organization, and ability to work under pressure. Strong computer skills; proficiency with Salesforce, Marketing Cloud, Canva, and social media platforms is highly desirable. Valid U.S. work authorization; no future sponsorship required.
