LEGAL ADMINISTRATIVE SPECIALIST (LITIGATION SUPPORT)

Duties Help Responsibilities If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for a wide range of legal support services in the Criminal Division. Typical work assignments will include: Assistance with case management and case presentations as well as automated case litigation and management programs. Case management and organization of case files. Automated support necessary to prepare, organize, index, develop, and manage exhibits, evidence, and data. Analyzes automated litigation support functions and monitors system use and response time. Prepares cases for litigation by collecting and evaluating evidence to support the position of the Government. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. Requirements Help Conditions of Employment You must be a U.S. Citizen or National. Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation. You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable. If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period. Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement and before placement in the position. GS-7 To be eligible at the GS-7 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions, as defined below : Specialized Experience, Education, OR a combination of Education and Experience. Specialized Experience One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level. Specialized experience is defined as providing automated litigation assistance by preparing discovery productions, including scanning and coding documents and creating DVDs; assisting in the use of technology to organize digital evidence; maintaining production logs by adhering to office protocol; and providing technical support such as duplicating documents and marking exhibits. Education One full year of graduate education in a related field (e.g., Information Technology, Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Law) OR completion of a full four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree AND meet one of the following superior academic achievement provisions: (1) a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher for all completed undergraduate course work or for all courses completed in the last two full years of undergraduate work; (2) a GPA of 3.5 or higher for all courses in the major field of study, or those courses in a major completed in the last two full years of undergraduate work; (3) ranking in the upper one-third of a college, university, or major subdivision or (4) membership in a national scholastic honor society. Combining Education and Experience Combination of experience and graduate level education that when combined, are equivalent to 100% of the required qualifications. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal 100 percent to qualify. GS-9 To be eligible at the GS-9 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions, as defined below : Specialized Experience, Education, OR a combination of Education and Experience. Specialized Experience One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level. Specialized experience is defined as providing automated litigation assistance such as maintaining accurate and current records regarding incoming electronic case materials; using software applications to extract electronic case materials from storage devices or download electronic case materials from secure file transfer sites; loading image, native, or text files into document review databases; and using software applications to copy electronic discovery productions to external media or file transfer systems. Education Possess a Master's or equivalent graduate degree in a related field (e.g., Information Technology, Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Law) such as LL.B. or J.D., if related; OR 2 full years of progressively higher graduate education leading to such a degree. This education must have been in one of the following fields or must have provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the following fields (e.g., Information Technology, Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Law). Combining Education and Experience I have a combination of experience and graduate level education that when combined, are equivalent to 100% of the required qualifications. Only graduate level education in excess of the first full year can be used in this calculation. To calculate your percentage of graduate education, first determine the total number of graduate level hours that exceed 18 semester hours (or your school's definition of one year of graduate study), then divide the total number of your excess graduate semester hours by 18 (or your school's definition of one year of graduate study). To calculate your percentage of specialized experience, divide the total number of months of qualifying experience by 12. Now, add the two percentages together. The sum of the percentages must equal at least 100%. GS-11 To be eligible at the GS-11 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions, as defined below : Specialized Experience, Education, OR a combination of Education and Experience. Specialized Experience One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level. Specialized experience is defined as participating in trial preparation and presentations; working with attorneys and legal support staff to recommend effective strategy to meet litigation needs; identifying and utilizing software packages such as databases; spreadsheets and word processing applications to present evidence; managing a variety of computer hardware for trial use; customizing databases and programs to meet individual user needs; preparing demonstrative exhibits required for litigation; organizing and managing case specific discovery. Education Possess one of the following types of education in a related field (e.g. Information Technology, Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Law): Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in a related field; OR 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree; OR LL.M., if related. Combining Education and Experience I have a combination of experience and graduate level education that when combined, are equivalent to 100% of the required qualifications. Only graduate level education in excess of the first two years can be used in this calculation. To calculate your percentage of graduate education, first determine the total number of graduate level hours that exceed 36 semester hours (or your school's definition of two years of graduate study), then divide the total number of your excess graduate semester hours by 18 (or your school's definition of one year of graduate study). The sum of the percentages must equal at least 100%. Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies. If your agency has notified you in writing that you are a displaced employee eligible for ICTAP consideration, you may receive selection priority if: 1) this vacancy is within your ICTAP eligibility; 2) you apply under the instructions in the announcement; and 3) you are found well-qualified for this vacancy. To be well-qualified, you must satisfy all qualification requirements for the vacant position and receive a score of 85 or better on established ranking criteria. You must provide proof of eligibility to receive selection priority. Such proof may include a copy of your written notification of ICTAP eligibility or a copy of your separation personnel action form.
