Labcorp Oncology is seeking a Medical Director, Clinical Development - MRD Portfolio (Solid Tumors ) to join our team in Durham, NC!

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 1st shift

Job Summary:

The Medical Director, Clinical Development – MRD Portfolio is a physician scientific leader responsible for shaping and executing the clinical development strategy for Labcorp Oncology's minimal residual disease (MRD) portfolio across solid tumors. This individual serves as the medical lead for the development, validation, and clinical adoption of MRD and circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA)-based technologies, advancing precision oncology through innovative molecular diagnostics that improve patient outcomes across the cancer care continuum.

As the clinical development lead for the MRD portfolio, this role is responsible for generating the clinical evidence required to support product development, clinical validity, clinical utility, reimbursement, guideline inclusion, and integration into routine oncology practice. The Medical Director partners closely with stakeholders across research and development, operations, biostatistics, medical affairs, market access, regulatory affairs, commercial, and executive leadership to develop and execute a cohesive clinical strategy across multiple tumor types and indications.

The successful candidate will be a board-certified medical oncologist with expertise in solid tumors, clinical research, and evidence generation. This individual will serve as a key scientific representative for Labcorp Oncology, collaborating with leading investigators, professional societies, cooperative groups, payers, and other external stakeholders to establish MRD testing as an integral component of personalized cancer management.

Job Responsibilities:

Clinical Development Leadership

  • Serve as the clinical development lead for Labcorp Oncology's MRD portfolio across solid tumors, providing strategic medical leadership for evidence generation, product development, and clinical adoption initiatives.
  • Develop and execute clinical development strategies supporting MRD and ctDNA-based technologies across multiple tumor types, disease settings, and clinical applications.
  • Lead the medical design and clinical oversight of evidence-generation programs that establish the clinical validity, clinical utility, and health economic value of MRD testing.
  • Drive alignment across internal stakeholders involved in clinical studies, evidence generation, and product development activities.
  • Translate emerging clinical data into actionable recommendations that inform portfolio strategy, indication expansion, product development, and clinical adoption.
  • Serve as the senior clinical subject matter expert for MRD technologies and applications across the oncology portfolio.
  • Support investigator-initiated studies, strategic research collaborations, and real-world evidence programs that expand the evidence base supporting MRD testing.

Portfolio and Product Leadership

  • Provide medical leadership for the MRD portfolio throughout the product lifecycle, from concept development through commercialization and lifecycle management.
  • Define clinical evidence requirements, intended use populations, clinical claims, validation strategies, and evidence-generation priorities necessary to support product adoption and clinical implementation.
  • Partner with R&D, product, and innovation teams to guide assay development, biomarker strategies, and next-generation technology initiatives.
  • Evaluate competitive technologies, emerging biomarkers, and evolving standards of care to inform portfolio priorities and future investment decisions.
  • Act as the primary medical advisor for MRD-related portfolio strategy and indication expansion opportunities.

Clinical Utility, Market Access, and Adoption

  • Partner with market access teams to develop and execute evidence-generation strategies supporting payer coverage, reimbursement, and health-system adoption.
  • Provide medical leadership for studies designed to demonstrate clinical utility, impact on physician decision-making, patient outcomes, and economic value.
  • Support interactions with payers, policy stakeholders, and guideline organizations by communicating the clinical rationale and value proposition of MRD testing.
  • Contribute to strategies supporting inclusion of MRD testing within clinical practice guidelines, treatment pathways, and value-based care models.
  • Ensure clinical development priorities and evidence-generation plans align with reimbursement, market access, and adoption objectives.

Investigator and External Scientific Leadership

  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with leading oncology investigators, academic medical centers, cooperative groups, professional societies, and industry partners.
  • Serve as the physician lead for external scientific collaborations, investigator engagement, and evidence-generation partnerships supporting MRD technologies.
  • Influence the evolution of MRD clinical applications through engagement with key opinion leaders, scientific experts, and research organizations.
  • Represent Labcorp Oncology as a recognized scientific expert at congresses, advisory boards, investigator meetings, and external scientific forums.
  • Engage key opinion leaders to support clinical development strategy, evidence generation, and long-term portfolio planning.

Medical Affairs and Scientific Communications

  • Provide medical leadership and post-launch support for MRD products, including interpretation of clinical evidence, management of complex clinical questions, and support for appropriate clinical implementation.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for healthcare providers regarding MRD testing and integration of results into patient management.
  • Provide medical expertise and scientific guidance for educational initiatives supporting MRD adoption across solid tumors, including tumor boards, webinars, educational programs, and scientific exchange activities.
  • Partner with medical affairs, commercial, and marketing teams to develop scientifically accurate and clinically meaningful educational content.
  • Lead publication planning and support development of manuscripts, abstracts, presentations, congress submissions, and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Maintain scientific rigor and ensure evidence is effectively communicated to diverse clinical, scientific, and payer audiences.

Strategic Leadership & Influence

  • Serve as the clinical development leader for the MRD portfolio, driving strategy and execution through scientific expertise, influence, and cross-functional collaboration rather than through direct people management.
  • Align diverse stakeholders around shared clinical development priorities, evidence-generation plans, and portfolio objectives.
  • Provide expert guidance to clinical, scientific, operational, and commercial colleagues supporting MRD initiatives.
  • Influence organizational decision-making through scientific insight, clinical expertise, and strategic recommendations.
  • Contribute to the development of clinical development processes, best practices, and organizational capabilities that support growth of Labcorp Oncology's precision oncology portfolio.
  • Mentor colleagues and provide scientific guidance to project teams, medical affairs partners, and other stakeholders as appropriate.

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Collaborate with leaders and stakeholders across Medical Affairs, Clinical Development, Operations, Biostatistics, Regulatory Affairs, Market Access, Commercial, Legal, Compliance, and Research & Development.
  • Lead cross-functional discussions regarding clinical development strategy, evidence-generation priorities, portfolio investments, and indication expansion opportunities.
  • Support regulatory submissions and interactions through clinical expertise, scientific rationale, and interpretation of evidence.
  • Partner with commercial and market access teams to ensure clinical evidence generation aligns with customer, payer, and healthcare system needs.
  • Monitor emerging scientific, clinical, technological, and competitive developments to inform strategic decision-making and future portfolio direction.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • M.D. or D.O. degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Board certification in Medical Oncology.
  • 5 or more years of post-fellowship clinical experience treating patients with solid tumors.
  • 3 or more years of oncology clinical development, clinical research, clinical trial leadership, or evidence-generation experience within the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, diagnostics, CRO, or academic research environment.
  • 8 or more years of experience designing, leading, or supporting prospective and/or retrospective clinical studies, including protocol development, endpoint selection, study conduct, data analysis, interpretation, and publication of results.
  • 5 or more years of experience working in cross-functional environments with operations, biostatistics, regulatory affairs, medical affairs, research & development, commercial, and/or market access teams.
  • 20 or more presentations delivered to scientific congresses, investigators, key opinion leaders (KOLs), healthcare providers, advisory boards, or medical education forums.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5 or more years of experience in molecular diagnostics, liquid biopsy, minimal residual disease (MRD), circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), precision oncology, or biomarker-driven clinical development.
  • 5 or more years of industry experience within diagnostics, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or life sciences organizations, with responsibility for oncology product development, medical affairs, clinical development, or translational research.
  • 3 or more years of experience serving as a medical lead, clinical development lead, or equivalent leadership role for an oncology assay, biomarker, diagnostic, or therapeutic development program.
  • 5 or more years of experience leading oncology clinical development programs, evidence-generation initiatives, or translational research activities across multiple solid tumor indications.
  • 3 or more studies or evidence-generation programs supporting clinical utility, reimbursement, payer coverage, guideline inclusion, or adoption of oncology diagnostics or precision medicine products.
  • 3 or more years of experience partnering with Market Access teams to develop evidence-generation strategies supporting value demonstration, reimbursement, and commercial adoption.
  • 3 or more years of direct people leadership experience, including management, mentoring, and performance development of physicians, scientists, and/or cross-functional clinical teams.
  • 20 or more peer-reviewed publications, scientific presentations, and participation at major oncology congresses.
  • Participation in 2 or more regulatory submissions, product launches, or major lifecycle management initiatives in oncology, molecular diagnostics, precision medicine, or related therapeutic areas.

Additional Job Standards:
