TDM Outreach Specialist

Department: Transportation Demand Management (TDM) Compensation: $67,000 - $78,000 / year Location: Los Angeles, CA Description Alta Planning + Design is hiring a TDM Outreach Specialist Level I or II for our Los Angeles office. This is a role for someone who finds meaning in the work of connecting people to places and who genuinely believes that transit, biking, carpooling, and walking are not just alternatives to driving alone, but better ways to move through communities. This is a full-time position that will support a portfolio of projects primarily based in the greater Los Angeles area, with a primary focus on conducting public outreach, providing high-quality customer service, engaging with community members and stakeholders, and assisting with the implementation of programs. The Role The role will support the implementation and day‑to‑day delivery of TDM programs that help employees, residents, students, visitors, and other travelers understand and use transportation options. The work may include commuter programs, employer services, TMA/TMO programs, transportation benefit programs, rideshare and vanpool programs, transit promotion, active transportation programs, parking management strategies, mobility hubs, first/last‑mile programs, shared mobility, and other initiatives that reduce single‑occupancy vehicle trips and vehicle miles traveled. This is a people‑centered implementation role. The specialist will frequently communicate with commuters, employers, clients, public agency staff, vendors, and community partners; explain transportation programs in clear and practical terms; and help turn plans and policies into programs that people can use. The position will include in‑person work and occasional events outside traditional business hours, including evenings and weekends. Day to Day No two days in this role are exactly alike, but there are common work activities that will make up your week. The TDM Specialist will spend most of their time on the following types of work: Supporting the implementation and ongoing administration of TDM programs for TMAs/TMOs, municipalities, regional transportation commissions, transit agencies, employers, developments, and other clients. Conducting outreach to employers and other organizations, scheduling meetings, presenting program information, following up on commitments, and helping partners identify practical transportation options for their employees, tenants, residents, or members. Planning and staffing community events, pop‑up outreach, lunch‑and‑learns, workshops, webinars, tabling activities, campaign launches, and other engagement efforts. This may include coordinating logistics, transporting materials, preparing displays, and tracking participation. Supporting TDM compliance and reporting activities, which may include gathering documentation, tracking commitments and deadlines, coordinating surveys, and maintaining records. Building and maintaining productive relationships with employers, employee transportation coordinators, property managers, public agency staff, transit providers, mobility vendors, community‑based organizations, and other program partners. Participating in client meetings, stakeholder meetings, TMA/TMO meetings, regional coordination efforts, and public meetings; taking clear notes, tracking action items, and following through on assigned tasks. Tracking program data, documenting customer interactions, maintaining accurate records, managing project assets, organizing materials, and monitoring inventories. Collaborating with and supporting project staff on the development, production and distribution of electronic, online, and print project materials. Supporting client‑facing communications in collaboration with project managers, such as identifying project needs and challenges, sharing timely updates, proactively surfacing recommendations, and recommending program innovations to strengthen project delivery. Assisting project managers with administrative tasks in support of program efforts. Qualifications Required This position requires a combination of skills, experience and education including, but not limited to Comfortable conducting in‑person outreach independently and as part of a team Experience working directly in an outreach or customer service capacity with the public Ability to connect with people from a variety of backgrounds Ability to answer in‑depth questions about transportation options in Los Angeles and Los Angeles County, including walking, bicycling, transit, and carpooling (including route selection, equipment, online resources and organizations, etc) Experience working with a varying software, including: Project management software (e.g., Asana, Wrike, Basecamp, etc.). Microsoft Office tools (e.g., Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). General understanding of other platforms that directly aid in program delivery. Ability to learn new platform as project need require Ability to manage, analyze, and engage with a large database of contacts Availability to staff in‑person events outside of traditional business hours, including on weekends and evenings Ability to travel to various locations in and around Los Angeles and Los Angeles County. Driver's license not required. Ability to lift, carry, and transport 25+ lbs Ability to work from Alta’s El Segundo (Los Angeles area) office two days per week, as well as effectively collaborate remotely. Preferred There are a number of additional skills, experience, and education that would be beneficial to this position including, but not limited to: At least two years professional experience related to sales, customer service, hospitality, administration, communications, marketing, public administration, public outreach and/or another related field and/or A bachelor's degree or higher in a related field (hospitality, communications, business, marketing, environmental studies, or others) Managing time and projects: good processes in place to get work done, to prioritize resources, initiatives, and timelines Knowledgeable (or highly curious) about behavior change, sustainability, transportation, TDM, city planning, community development, economic development, or related fields Desire to positively affect the community, region, and environment Eagerness to build and refine your skills Experience interacting with diverse groups of people Bilingual in Spanish What We Offer Flexible Schedule Alta offers a flexible, hybrid work schedule where most employees work from home three days per week. This range reflects the company’s good faith estimate of the compensation for this position at the time of posting. Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, internal equity, and geographic location.
