Deputy Sheriff

Arlington County Sheriff’s Office is offering the following sign‑on bonuses for incoming Deputy Sheriff hires: $5,000.00 – New hires receive $2,500.00 at hire and $2,500.00 upon completion of Field Officer Training. No contract required. $10,000.00 – Former sworn staff who have been out for 12 months and remain DCJS certified. 3‑year contract required. Bonus may be split into two payments. $15,000.00 – Lateral transfer from another certified agency. No academy required. 3‑year contract required. Bonus may be split into two payments. Deputy Sheriffs work in all areas of the Sheriff’s Office and may be assigned to any unit with daily interaction with inmates. Most positions are based in the state‑of‑the‑art direct supervision Detention Facility. Deputies work 12‑hour fixed shifts (day, night, weekend, holiday) and 15 days per month. Deputies earn full salary and benefits while training at the Academy. Responsibilities Supervise and monitor daily activities of inmates, including security within housing units, inmate visits, booking/processing, program activities, food service, recreation, and general work assignments. Manage inmate behavior and use appropriate force as necessary. Supervise inmates assigned to Inmate Work Programs. Screen and receive the public seeking admission to the facility. Process inmates’ personal property and money. Perform court security duties: secure courtrooms, monitor courts in session, escort prisoners, conduct security checks, respond to incidents. Serve legal papers, execute criminal warrants, take individuals into custody, and schedule and execute court’ordered evictions. Transport inmates and other individuals in custody to and from other correctional facilities, hearings, medical facilities, and appointments. Write reports and document incidents. Minimum Requirements High school diploma or GED equivalent. At least 21 years of age. Excellent physical condition. U.S. citizen. Bondable for handling Commonwealth funds. Valid driver’s license. Availability for emergency calls, standby duty, overtime and details outside the facility. Willingness to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and fixed 12‑hour shifts. Successful completion of the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy within 12 months of employment, including academic, physical, driving and firearms training. Commitment of 48 months after successful completion of the Academy. Compensation and Benefits Hourly range: $32.22 to $54.40. Full salary and benefits during Academy training. Spanish oral proficiency exam for candidates proficient in English and Spanish; successful candidates receive language pay.
