RN - Intensive Care Unit - Cardiovascular

Job Summary: Provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. Reporting and accountable to the Nurse Manager/Director, the Clinical Nurse is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process in a hospital setting.

Essential Duties:

• Education:
  • Participates in identifying and meeting learning needs of self.
  • Attends educational programs based on identified learning needs.
  • Utilizes patient education materials relevant to the patient population with assistance.
  • Assesses readiness to learn of the patient/family/caregivers.
  • Evaluates the developmental level of the patient and factors affecting their ability to learn.
• Evaluation of Care:
  • Identifies expected patient outcomes and seeks guidance as needed in revising the plan of care.
  • Participates in discussions with interdisciplinary team members in the evaluation of patient care.
  • Communicates relevant information to promote continuity of care.
• Implementation:
  • Demonstrates competence in the care of patients with complex needs, including physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety aspects of care.
  • Performs bedside point of care testing as necessary for the patient care plan.
  • Utilizes healthcare organization and nursing standards, policies, and procedures in care delivery.
  • Organizes and prioritizes care according to patient/family needs.
  • Consults with appropriate resources regarding patients with complex care issues, unusual teaching needs, or high-risk discharge planning.
• Leadership:
  • With assistance, develops professional growth goals or strategies to minimize limitations.
  • Achieves identified goals and objectives within the specified timeframe or renegotiates with a supervisor.
  • Is knowledgeable about activities promoting intra/interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Participates in the development and achievement of unit goals and performance improvement activities.
  • Effectively utilizes communication systems and promotes cost-effective care.
  • Provides constructive feedback to co-workers and maintains awareness of public policy and regulatory guidelines affecting the healthcare environment.
  • Promotes a safe, clean, and secure environment for all.
• Patient Assessment:
  • Recognizes data from complex situations to determine priorities for care.
  • Integrates assessment data into a comprehensive overview prior to communicating with others.
  • Assesses and anticipates discharge needs of patients and their families.
  • Develops relationships with families to enhance their ability to advocate for the patient and themselves.
• Planning:
  • Collaborates with patients/families to prepare or update care plans.
  • Utilizes available multidisciplinary resources in planning care.
  • Begins to employ a full range of communication methods for effective planning.
  • Identifies and addresses cultural and ethnic considerations in patient care planning.
  • Demonstrates the ability to prioritize tasks for patients with complex issues.
• Research:
  • Reads relevant journals and articles to enhance practice.
  • Presents ideas and questions to staff for assessment of applicability.
