About I Be Black Girl I Be Black Girl (IBBG) is a collective action organization in Nebraska that leads with boldness, innovation and inspiration, actively creating a radical change‑making culture that centers Black women, femmes and girls. Inspired by the work of bell hooks, Audre Lorde and other Black feminist and womanist thought leaders, IBBG provides transformational change at the intersections of gender and race. The term “I Be,” framed by author bell hooks in Be Boy Buzz, inspired IBBG’s founder to fill spaces with what it means to exist as a Black woman, femme or girl—where we are free to define and own that narrative. About the Position The Maternal Health Initiative (MHI) Communications & Engagement Coordinator is embedded within the MHI Team and works cross‑functionally with the Community Engagement Team to keep both teams aligned on messaging, updates, and communication needs. The role supports the implementation of communication strategies for campaigns and narrative‑shift storytelling, while also planning and coordinating outreach for MHI events, programs, and community‑facing projects. The Coordinator also captures program activity and translates research, findings, and community insights into accessible, compelling materials for a range of audiences. Job Purpose The Coordinator works hands‑on in a fast‑moving, collaborative environment, navigating sensitive topics with care and applying strategic communication skills to advance maternal health advocacy. Core Functions Maintain organized digital archives, shared drives, and content libraries for MHI materials Manage project management tasks related to communications timelines, deliverables, and reporting Write copy for social media and newsletter outlets with a focus on maternal and child health and collaborate with team members to create and distribute a monthly coalition newsletter Attend community conversations, focus groups, events and activities to capture photo/video content and behind‑the‑scenes work for external use Support development of digital and print collateral for campaigns, events, and community engagement Stay actively informed with maternal and child health trends and events to support content ideas and engagement strategies Develop and tailor compelling communication pieces with an intentional focus on system‑level narrative shift using a storytelling lens, including captions, memos, one‑pagers, press releases, and op‑eds, with the support of MHI leadership Provide clear creative direction to the design team partners for final production of assets and collateral Develop the strategy and ensure consistent flow and branding in collaboration with team members to share research summaries effectively Support narrative shift strategy by developing and amplifying stories that reflect the lived experiences and expertise of underserved moms, families and communities, while aligning partners, data, and resources toward shared, measurable change Ensure accuracy and timeliness of all communications through research and verification Assist with rapid‑response communication needs related to maternal health issues, policy shifts, or community concerns Communications Frameworks to Advance Engagement Strategy Develop communication tools, strategy, framework and approach to support larger external audience buy‑in and participation Work with the MHI Team to identify contact lists and segment audiences for targeted communication Curate communication collateral that supports participation in events, programs and initiatives Support development of communication plans with team leads that align with event and program goals, including timelines and touch points Data Reporting & Insights Track engagement indicators such as comments, shares, reposts, saves, and link clicks Monitor supporter sentiment and community feedback Share observations and recommendations to strengthen digital strategy, research translation, and community engagement with the Community Engagement Team and MHI leadership Estimated Distribution of Duties 60% Content Capture & Communications Development 20% Community Engagement & Research Support 20% Data reporting and insights Required Skills Bachelor’s degree in communications, public health, journalism, or a related field or 2‑4 years experience in communications within nonprofit, advocacy, public health, or community‑based settings Experience with maternal health or community health preferred Strong organizational skills and ability to manage shifting priorities 2‑4 years’ experience managing or supporting social media platforms (Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn, etc.) Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and navigate sensitive topics with care Strong writing, editing, and research translation Willingness to learn and grow with staff and to create a positive workplace culture Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively across team Physical Requirements Hybrid work environment (mainly remote) Frequent telephone and virtual communications, hearing and seeing Frequent walking, standing, and sitting Frequent driving (with valid driver’s license, insurance, etc.) Other Requirements Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as necessary Access to reliable transportation Location Hybrid based in Nebraska Salary Range $50,000‑$75,000 Reports to Maternal Health Initiative (MHI) and Evaluation Director Benefits Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance; Employee Assistance Program; flexible PTO; 12 weeks paid parent leave, professional development and coaching opportunities EEO Statement I Be Black Girl is an equal opportunity employer that is committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of our staff, clients, volunteers, subcontractors and partners.
