The RoleThe Global Engineering Strategy team (GES) is looking for a results-oriented, inventive Senior Mechanical Engineer with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) expertise to drive thermal modelling and cooling system design for new and expanding data centre developments across EMEA.You will lead CFD modelling and analysis for data centre cooling systems, providing simulation-driven insights that inform mechanical design decisions, optimise airflow and thermal performance, and support the delivery of energy-efficient facilities. You will sit within the Design Engineering team of the broader Data Center Engineering (DCE) organisation. You will work with our Mechanical Engineering, Construction, Operations, Commissioning, Pre-Construction, and Environmental/Sustainability teams on design strategy and implementation across the EMEA region, serving as the CFD subject matter expert - providing detailed simulation reports and specifications that shape our engineering strategy for next-generation data centre designs.As well as providing support and mentorship within the wider DCE engineering community, while offering creative, out-of-the-box solutions and having fun doing it.Key job responsibilitiesOur Senior Mechanical CFD Engineers;- Are strong technical leaders who can prioritise well, communicate clearly, and have a consistent track record of delivery.- Provide creative engineering solutions balanced with high quality and customer focus.- Work as part of a global team to accomplish our goals.- Perform technical design and simulation work across multiple EMEA regions.- Thrive in a fast-paced environment with evolving design requirements.- Lead through ambiguity, proposing and validating multiple design approaches. - Understand the best practices for data centre mechanical system designs. - Mentor junior engineers in CFD workflows and simulation best practices. - Have demonstrated experience delivering CFD-driven design outcomes in mission-critical or large-scale facilities.Their responsibilities include:- Performing CFD models on innovative cooling designs, including airflow distribution, thermal performance, and cooling efficiency studies.- Selecting and validating appropriate simulation methodologies for data centre thermal environments.- Performing building energy use calculations for determining capacity and type of cooling system required- Performing water efficiency use calculations to determine quantity of water needed on site- Providing reports to senior leadership on simulation results, including clear visualisation and interpretation of data.- Working with global ME teams to achieve alignment of design and CFD modelling standards.- Driving process improvements across the organisation, including development of automation scripts and tools to improve throughput.- Supporting rollout of new cooling strategies and design standards.- Collaborating with other DCE teams to assess how cooling designs and products can be deployed across various site development projects.- Ability to work on concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions.Travel will occasionally be necessary but shouldn't be more than 25%.About the teamWhy AWSAmazon Web Services (AWS) is the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud platform. That’s why you’ll find endless knowledge-sharing, mentorship and other career-advancing resources here to help you develop into a better-rounded professional.Basic qualifications- Experience in industrial or commercial engineering in mission critical facilities including but not limited to: data centers, power generation or oil and gas facilities- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field- Experience with CAD software (AutoCAD, REVIT, BIM 360, etc.)- Experience in data center design, HVAC design and related product development- Knowledge of mechanical systems in critical Data Center operations including but not limited to CRAC/CRAHs/AHUs, chillers, cooling towers, storage tanks, chemical systems, heat exchangers, piping systems, pumps, valves, duct systems, fans, or dampers- Demonstrated experience with industry CFD software (e.g. ANSYS Fluent, CFX, OpenFOAM, 6SigmaDCX, or equivalent)Preferred qualification - Experience carrying design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment or mass production- Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents- Experience using a variety of web-based and other software tools for calculation and data processing- Professional Engineering registration, or experience in automated conveyors systems and controls, electrical and electronic principles, blueprint and electrical schematic reading, CMMS programs, preventive maintenance procedures, industrial electrical, industrial controls , industrial electronics- Knowledge of building codes and regulations including Life Safety, BOCA, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA- Master's degree in engineering or equivalent- Knowledge of programming or other scripting languages and coding skills (C/C++/C#, Node.JS, Java, Python, PHP, Ruby)- Experience with free-cooling, water-side economiser, and indirect evaporative cooling system design- Prior consulting or project management experienceAmazon is an equal opportunities employer.
