Medical Technologist - Pathology Laboratory - Blood Bank - Days

Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 333-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus including at a network of Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis. FLSA Status Non-Exempt Job Role Summary The Medical Technologist performs pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic clinical laboratory testing to assist healthcare providers in diagnosing and treating patients, as well as disease monitoring and prevention. Technologists comply with Eskenazi Health policies, Pathology Department procedures, regulatory standards, and PRIDE values. They may work in areas such as Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology/Serology and Blood Bank. Essential Functions and Responsibilities Follow policies and procedures (SOPs) to minimize errors during the pre-analytic phase, evaluate specimen acceptability, prepare specimens, accession in LIS, document errors, monitor inventory, and notify before depletion. Follow policies and procedures during the testing phase: perform and document laboratory testing for patient specimens and proficiency samples, conduct quality control, assess acceptability, record corrective actions, perform equipment maintenance, troubleshoot, communicate issues, and complete daily tasks including shift hand-offs. Follow policies and procedures during the post-analytic phase: verify and report patient test results accurately in the LIS, including documentation during downtimes, communicate critical values and corrected results, ensure minimal clerical errors, and document corrections. Complete assignments and mandates per policies, procedures, and manager direction, including procedure reviews, occupational health requirements, section competencies, proficiency testing, hospital education, and maintain certifications as required. Prioritize and organize work to balance multiple tasks while maintaining turnaround time standards, using outstanding lists and worksheets, assisting others to maintain workflow and meet expectations. Act as a self-starter, be ready at shift start, demonstrate flexibility with schedules, assist others, and ensure workflow continuity by communicating with coworkers when leaving the work area. Identify and solve problems independently and document them. Perform other job-related duties as assigned, e.g., training students or new employees, startup studies for instruments or new procedures, validation of computer or interface upgrades, and acting as an instrument key operator. Job Requirements Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology or Associate of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology, or Bachelor of Science in a related life science (e.g., Biology or Chemistry) with at least 2 years of clinical lab experience. Degrees must be from an accredited U.S. college/university or equivalently assessed foreign degrees. ASCP or equivalent certification required. Career Ladder: new graduates must complete training, competencies, certification exam, and demonstrate consistent independent work before moving to MTII; previous certified MT experience leads to hire as MTII. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of accrediting agencies and regulations for lab areas (TJC, ISDH, CAP, AABB, FDA). Computer skills and familiarity with LIS.
