Laborer 1

The City of Jersey City is seeking a qualified and experienced Laborer 1 for the Department of Public Works, Division of Forestry. Under direction, supervises and works with developers, contractors, other City agencies, utility entities and field staff; this position involves performing manual and unskilled labor related to tree maintenance work throughout the City.

Examples of Duties

Job Duties:

• Prepares saws and other equipment in preparation of pruning and removal work.
• Uses ropes in conjunction with climbers/tree maintenance workers.
• Clears brush out of work zone as it is lowered.
• Secures work zones so that it is safe and orderly.
• Manages pedestrian and vehicular traffic by setting up road cones and/or caution tape.
• Uses lift gates and other equipment to load logs and brush onto trucks.
• Securely stows tools and equipment in between jobs.
• Assists drivers when backing up vehicles or equipment in and out of work sites.
• Uses rakes, shovels, blowers and other such clean up tools to maintain safe work area and finished jobs.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Knowledge of the methods, materials, and supplies used to perform varied types of manual and unskilled tasks.
• Ability to perform manual tasks either alone or as a member of a group.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor for prolonged periods under varying temperatures and climatic conditions.
• Ability to follow prescribed instructions.
• Ability to learn to use the tools and equipment needed to perform routine, unskilled labor tasks.
• Ability to follow safety precautions in the operation of assigned tools and equipment.

Qualifications

Required Education: High School Diploma or GED required. Bachelor's degree preferred. Required Experience: One (1) year of experience in the care and maintenance of young trees. Required License: Appointees must possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
