This includes executing orders, dispensing medications, and assisting in examinations and treatment of patients. The RN applies nursing and supervisory techniques in the care, treatment, and referrals of inmates/residents. This role performs all technical and clinical procedures within the scope of education and licensure. Appropriate nursing skills are applied in the treatment of inmates/residents. Attendance during sick calls with physicians is required to assess inmates/residents. The RN prepares a list of inmates/residents to be examined and readies the examining room and equipment. Medication is dispensed during pill calls, and documentation is completed as required by applicable policies. The RN communicates with licensed independent providers for medication and treatment orders. Emergency procedures are performed as needed, and licensed providers are notified for treatment orders. Coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel is a key responsibility. Monitoring inmate/resident hospitalizations for early releases is part of the job. Guidance, supervision, and monitoring of nursing care provided by license-exempt medical staff are required. A good working relationship with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside agencies must be maintained. Established corporate, facility, and correctional policies and procedures are utilized in decision-making. The RN regularly evaluates the provision of medical services to prevent unnecessary use or duplication. Absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records must be maintained. Assistance in reviewing medical files to ensure documentation of all provided services is part of the role. All potential catastrophic illnesses are closely monitored. Auditing pharmacy use for adherence to formulary is required. Compliance with all pharmacy laws, especially regarding controlled substances, is essential. Observing and recording inmate/resident behavior is part of the responsibilities. The medical unit must be inspected for items that could be contraband, and supplies must be securely stored or disposed of safely. Health counseling and education on an individual or group basis are provided as required. Assistance in preparing and maintaining records, reports, and logs is necessary, with appropriate grammar used. Reading, analyzing, and interpreting medical and technical procedures, governmental regulations, and documents is required. Processing and responding to lawsuits, and attending court hearings when necessary, is part of the job. Facilitating accreditation of the medical program by providing efficient and approved medical services is important. Preparation and dissemination of safety and accident reports are required. Appropriate action must be taken in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies.
