Job Title: Senior Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineer Job Description

This Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer role supports engineering, design, and modernization initiatives for nuclear power generation facilities. You will focus on process instrumentation that measures variables such as temperature, pressure, flow, and level, and on the control systems that use these signals for plant indication, alarms, and control. The position involves developing and reviewing engineering design packages, evaluating vendor solutions, preparing and reviewing electrical and instrumentation drawings, and supporting field implementation activities. You will help lead digital upgrade projects, ensure compliance with nuclear regulatory requirements, and verify that new system designs meet operational and regulatory expectations while providing technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers.

• Develop, review, and approve instrumentation and controls engineering design packages for nuclear power plant projects.
• Design and support instrumentation systems that measure and monitor process variables such as temperature, pressure, flow, and tank levels.
• Design, evaluate, and implement control system architectures that use instrumentation signals for plant indication, alarm, and control functions.
• Prepare, review, and validate electrical and instrumentation drawings and associated engineering documentation.
• Perform technical evaluations of vendor proposals, equipment specifications, and system solutions to ensure compliance with project and regulatory requirements.
• Support design changes, including engineering calculations, design modifications, and modernization initiatives for nuclear power plants.
• Lead and support digital upgrade projects, including replacement of analog systems with PLC and DCS-based digital control systems.
• Apply and interpret NRC regulations and nuclear standards to ensure that designs meet all applicable nuclear regulatory requirements.
• Verify that new and modified systems meet operational, safety, and regulatory expectations through analysis, testing, and documentation review.
• Provide technical oversight during field implementation, including field testing, validation, and troubleshooting of instrumentation and control systems.
• Collaborate closely with clients, project teams, vendors, and other engineers to plan and execute plant modifications and modernization projects.
• Review and mentor junior engineering staff, providing technical guidance and conducting design reviews to ensure quality and consistency.
• Participate in major nuclear plant modification projects, contributing technical leadership and subject matter expertise in I&C engineering.
• Support digital modernization initiatives, including analog-to-digital control system upgrades and integration of platforms such as Ovation.
• Consider cybersecurity aspects in the design and implementation of digital control systems, in coordination with applicable standards and guidelines.

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution.
• At least 10 years of experience in Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Engineering, including experience in nuclear power plants.
• Significant experience supporting instrumentation and control system design, modification, or modernization projects within commercial nuclear power plants.
• Experience supporting digital modernization projects and analog-to-digital control system upgrades.
• Strong understanding of process instrumentation used to measure and monitor temperature, pressure, flow, and tank levels.
• Solid understanding of control system architecture for plant indication, alarm, and control functions.
• Experience with PLC-based control systems and Distributed Control Systems (DCS).
• Knowledge and practical experience with Ovation or similar DCS platforms.
• Strong understanding of nuclear regulatory requirements, including NRC regulations and nuclear standards relevant to I&C systems.
• Ability to prepare, review, and validate engineering design documentation, including drawings, calculations, and technical reports.
• Experience performing technical evaluations of vendor equipment, system solutions, and design proposals.
• Ability to provide technical oversight, including design review, field testing, and validation of I&C systems.
• Strong communication skills to work effectively with clients, project teams, vendors, and cross-functional stakeholders.

• Professional Engineer (PE) license or active progress toward obtaining one.
• Previous experience holding a Responsible Engineer title at a nuclear facility.
• Experience with major nuclear plant modification and modernization projects.
• Prior experience providing technical mentorship, coaching, and design reviews for junior engineers.
• Hands-on experience with digital upgrade projects, including replacement of analog control systems.
• Familiarity with cybersecurity considerations and best practices for digital control systems in nuclear environments.
• Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership on complex, multi-disciplinary projects.
• Experience working with Ovation or similar digital control platforms in a nuclear or power generation setting.

This role operates primarily in an engineering office environment with a strong focus on design, technical review, and project coordination. You will collaborate closely with project management, design teams, field services, vendors, and client stakeholders in a cross-functional setting. The position includes occasional visits to nuclear plant sites to support field implementation, testing, and validation of instrumentation and control systems. Work involves a combination of detailed engineering design, digital modernization initiatives, client interaction, and on-site implementation support, offering exposure to advanced digital control technologies and critical modernization projects within the nuclear power industry.

This is a Permanent position based out of Charlotte, NC.

The pay range for this position is $70.00 - $90.00/hr.

This is a fully onsite position in Charlotte,NC.
