About Coalition for Hispanic Family Services (CHFS):

CHFS is a community- based, family-focused organization of color providing an array of services to children and families in North Brooklyn and Western Queens. For over 36 years, CHFS has worked with vulnerable populations that include children in foster care, seriously emotionally disturbed children and youth and families at risk of abuse and neglect. The Article 29i Health Services Clinic at CHFS takes a comprehensive, holistic approach to working with children and adolescent’s mental health needs while in foster care. Our clinic provides assessments, short-term treatment, crisis intervention and support in collaboration with the foster care team, foster parents, birth parents, schools, and systems supporting the children’s needs. The clinician utilizes trauma-informed care, cultural competence, and a strength-based theoretical framework to improve the lives of children impacted by abuse and neglect.

POSITION SUMMARY:

When a child is placed in foster care they experience, trauma associated with the separation from family, community, school peers, etc. It is also known that children placed in foster care have experienced exposure to multiple traumatic events prior to placement. The role of the Licensed Behavioral Health Practitioner is to ensure that disruptive, troublesome behaviors exhibited by children in care are seen through a trauma lens providing brief therapy and care corrdination. The Licensed Behavioral Health Practitioner (LBHP) is an individual who is curious and invested in joining a developing team dedicated to learning how to ensure that children in care get mental health services that address complex behavioral health needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

• Conducting trauma informed psychosocial assessments for identifying physical health, mental health, and developmental needs within their social context.
• Establishing specific and focused treatment plans for children, utilizing historical and current available information.
• Providing trauma-informed counseling and treatment services to children/youth in care, birth parents and foster parents.
• Intervening in crisis situations.
• Working collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team to promote stability
• Working collaboratively with service systems responsible for the care of traumatized children, i.e., schools, medical practitioners, outside therapists, etc.
• Providing substance abuse counseling and family planning counseling, when necessary.
• Providing psycho-education and wellness education.
• Structuring interventions to decrease problem behavior and increase developmentally appropriate pro-social behavior.
• Making referrals for evaluations and/or services when there is an assessed need.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• Graduate of an Accredited School of Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapist, Creative Arts Therapist.
• Licensed by the State of NY, LCSW, LMHC, LMFT, LCAT or eligible for a limited permit.
• Good writing/record keeping skills and computer literacy
• Excellent organizational, time-management, and team work skills.
• A willingness to work collaboratively with other systems that impact on children in foster care.
• Bilingual in Spanish and English, preferred.
• Understanding and appreciation of the roles of race, religion, ethnicity, sexual preference, and individual values as they relate to servicing clients and families.
• Willingness to work in the office.
• Ability and willingness to travel to client’s home, school, etc., when necessary to negotiate any steps and barriers to client’s treatment.
