Position Summary
The Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) provides specialized instruction and clinical services to elementary students who demonstrate communication disorders. The SLP functions as a critical member of the educational team, managing evaluations, IEP development, and varied service delivery models to ensure student success within the general education curriculum.
Qualifications & Certification Requirements
Master's Degree: In Speech-Language Pathology from an ASHA-accredited university.
Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL): Valid PEL with an endorsement in Speech-Language Pathology.
IDFPR License: Current license from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
ASHA Certification: CCC-SLP preferred (CFY candidates supported).
Compliance: Must pass a fingerprint-based background check and physical exam.
Areas of Responsibility
1. Assessment and Diagnostic Procedures
Utilize appropriate diagnostic procedures to complete formal evaluations. Establish the type and severity of disorders in all areas of communication, including the calculation of severity rating scores. Utilize appropriate exit criteria for student dismissal from services. Implement all procedures in accordance with Illinois and PL 94-142 Rules and Regulations.
2. IEP Development and Team Coordination
Develop IEPs stating annual/short-term goals for the child's current level of functioning and objectives to meet their needs. Update student progress on the IEP at least twice per year. Obtain required parental/guardian consent and input prior to initiation of the IEP and subsequent remediation. Participate in regularly scheduled team meetings, Student Service meetings, and the annual review process. Inform parents/guardians of team recommendations if they are not in attendance at meetings.
3. Service Delivery and Clinical Management
Schedule students using frameworks appropriate to educational needs (individual, consultative, collaborative, etc.) as determined by Severity Criteria. Prepare lesson plans and treatment materials before the beginning of each session. Start and end treatment sessions punctually. Set up and operate clinical equipment including AAC devices, assistive listening devices, and computers. Provide instructions that are clear, concise, and appropriate to the student's developmental age and communication style. Use appropriate stimuli, cues, and prompts to elicit target behaviors.
4. Consultation and Collaborative Models
Serve as a communication consultant and resource for teachers and parents through conferences, demonstrations, or workshops. Provide consultation utilizing models such as: Scheduled meetings with teachers to discuss student progress. Instruction to staff on carryover techniques for the classroom. Monitoring students within the classroom setting. Forming support groups for classes with critical speech/language needs. Conduct classroom language groups with the teacher as an active participant as requested or determined necessary. Sharing information on programs and methods of learning with mainstream teachers.
5. Professionalism and District Policy
Seek clarification from the Director of Student Services as needed to follow District/SLP procedures. Maintain open communication with parents/guardians and maintain all records with strict confidentiality. Implement infection control procedures and universal precautions consistent with District guidelines. Function as a member of the education and support programs instituted for student management. Assume other responsibilities at the direction of the Director of Student Services and/or Building Principal.
Terms of Employment
Work Year: Standard school calendar as defined by the district.
Salary: Compensation is determined by education and experience as outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Refer to the current CBA salary schedule for details.
Benefits: Health, dental, vision, and Illinois TRS contributions per the CBA.
