We are currently seeking a dependable and safety-focused Utility Locator to identify, mark, document, and help protect underground fiber optic and telecommunications assets.

Required Qualifications

• Valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record
• Ability to drive extensively and repeatedly enter and exit a vehicle throughout the workday
• Ability to read and understand utility maps, construction prints, aerial imagery, and work orders
• Ability to operate handheld utility detection equipment and GPS units
• Basic computer skills, including the ability to complete and submit work using a laptop, tablet, or mobile device
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to communicate professionally with managers, contractors, utility representatives, homeowners, and field crews
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple locate requests and deadlines
• Ability to lift up to 100 pounds when required
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check
• Authorization to work in the United States

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous utility locating or damage-prevention experience
• Experience locating underground fiber optic or telecommunications facilities
• Knowledge of One Call or 811 locate procedures
• Experience using electromagnetic locating equipment
• Experience with GIS databases, GPS data collection, or digital mapping systems
• Experience reading and interpreting underground utility maps
• Knowledge of Outside Plant fiber optic infrastructure
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification
• Bilingual English and Spanish

Position Summary

The Utility Locator is responsible for locating, marking, documenting, and protecting underground fiber optic and telecommunications infrastructure before excavation and construction activities begin.

The position requires extensive daily travel, frequent communication with customers and contractors, accurate completion of locate tickets, and the safe use of electronic locating, GPS, and GIS equipment.

The successful candidate will prioritize daily locate requests, develop efficient travel routes, review maps and field records, identify underground assets, mark their location accurately, and submit complete documentation within required timelines.

Primary ResponsibilitiesUtility Locating and Damage Prevention

• Read and interpret utility maps, construction prints, aerial imagery, work orders, and facility records
• Locate underground fiber optic and telecommunications assets using approved electronic detection equipment
• Mark underground facilities using required paint, flags, stakes, and other approved materials
• Respond to locate requests within established customer and regulatory timelines
• Review locate tickets and prioritize work based on deadlines, location, route efficiency, and urgency
• Identify discrepancies between field conditions, utility maps, and existing records
• Report damaged, exposed, missing, or improperly documented facilities
• Help prevent damage to critical telecommunications and broadband infrastructure

Route Planning and Field Operations

• Plan and manage a daily route containing multiple locate requests
• Drive extensively throughout the assigned service area
• Repeatedly enter and exit a company vehicle throughout the workday
• Walk several miles per day across grass, gravel, ditches, construction sites, highways, industrial properties, and private property
• Work safely around active construction, vehicle traffic, utility infrastructure, and changing site conditions
• Participate in on-call assignments, emergency response, and occasional overnight travel when required

GIS, GPS and Documentation

• Operate handheld GPS units according to manufacturer and company procedures
• Enter field information into GIS databases and electronic recordkeeping systems
• Convert field-collected information into accurate digital asset records
• Use coordinate geometry, keyboard entry, digital maps, scanning, and other available methods to update GIS information
• Review existing and incoming data for accuracy, completeness, usefulness, and quality
• Complete and transmit locate tickets using a laptop, tablet, or mobile device
• Maintain accurate daily production records and supporting documentation
• Submit completed tickets and reports within established deadlines

Outside Plant Route Maintenance

• Perform basic Outside Plant route maintenance activities
• Dig holes for marker posts and related infrastructure
• Install or replace ground wires and ground rods
• Remove and replace damaged or missing utility marker signs
• Inspect routes for damaged markers, exposed facilities, erosion, hazards, or maintenance concerns
• Report conditions that could affect the safety or reliability of the fiber route

Customer and Stakeholder Communication

• Communicate daily with utility managers, contractors, construction crews, homeowners, and property representatives
• Discuss locate requests, access requirements, facility locations, conflicts, and field conditions
• Provide clear and professional information regarding marked facilities
• Escalate locate conflicts, missing records, or unsafe conditions to management
• Represent TACI professionally while working on public and private property

Safety and Quality Assurance

• Wear all required safety gear and personal protective equipment
• Operate locating equipment, GPS units, vehicles, and safety equipment properly
• Follow TACI safety policies, customer requirements, and applicable regulations
• Maintain awareness of traffic, terrain, weather, construction activity, and environmental hazards
• Perform each locate carefully and accurately to reduce the risk of utility damage
• Maintain company equipment, tools, and assigned vehicles in clean and safe condition

• Underground fiber assets are located and marked accurately
• Locate tickets are completed within required timelines
• Field records, GIS data, and documentation are accurate and complete
• Travel routes and daily assignments are managed efficiently
• Strong communication is maintained with contractors, homeowners, customers, and utility representatives
• Safety requirements are consistently followed
• Potential utility conflicts and damage risks are identified early
• Assigned equipment and company vehicles are operated responsibly
• Reliable attendance and consistent field productivity are maintained

Physical Requirements

• Ability to drive for extended periods and repeatedly enter and exit a vehicle
• Ability to walk several miles per day across uneven and difficult terrain
• Ability to stand, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, dig, and carry equipment throughout the workday
• Ability to periodically lift up to 100 pounds
• Ability to remove and replace manhole covers weighing between 100 and 300 pounds using an approved manhole cover removal tool
• Ability to work around highways, construction sites, industrial properties, ditches, and active utility environments
• Ability to work outdoors in extreme heat, cold, rain, wind, snow, dust, and other adverse weather conditions
• Ability to wear safety boots, a hard hat, safety glasses, high-visibility clothing, and other required PPE
• Ability to work on-call hours, overtime, weekends, emergencies, and occasional overnight travel when required
