Community Outreach Library Assistant

Job Overview The Library Assistant, under general supervision, provides basic paraprofessional library services in an assigned service area of responsibility to support daily library operations. This is a year-round, part-time position, working less than 20 hours per week in the Community Engagement Department of Main Library in Monroe. Must be able to work weekdays, weekends and evenings. Duties include assisting staff with community outreach events, driving OLiVe, the library's outreach vehicle, to community events, effectively and courteously assisting patrons with circulation transactions, and assisting with creating and disseminating monthly outreach emails and materials. Must have excellent communication and customer engagement skills. Great technology skills are required. Responsibilities Meets the needs of each patron by promptly and efficiently using the library's resources. Responds to the needs of coworkers in work unit. Helps maintain the collection. Answers telephone queries quickly and efficiently, referring callers to the appropriate library department. Maintains knowledge of library policy and procedure. Reports any unsafe or threatening condition to library security personnel, administration, or proper authorities. Attends staff development programs. Possesses basic knowledge of library's electronic and physical resources. Helps advocate for the library and its services in both internal and external settings. Accepts changes in hours or assigned tasks as needed to provide excellent public service; adheres to assigned schedule with regular and dependable attendance. Position Specific Functions Community Engagement Assist with bringing OLiVe, the library’s outreach library vehicle, out in the community to meet patrons where they are. Assists with staffing community events. Effectively and courteously assists patrons with basic to intermediate circulation transactions and provides reader's advisory assistance to patrons of all ages by selecting age-appropriate and reading-level-appropriate materials. Knowledge of and ability to speak on programs and services the library has to offer. Assist with creating and disseminating monthly outreach emails and promotional materials. Minimum Qualifications Library Assistant ($17.36 - $26.04 Hourly) Education and Experience: Requires an Associate’s Degree and one (1) year of experience of customer service; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Library Associate ($17.92- $26.88 Hourly) Education and Experience: Requires a Bachelor’s Degree and one (1) year of customer service experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Library Specialist ($21.92 - $32.89 Hourly) Education and Experience: Requires a Bachelor's Degree and two (2) years of experience in customer service; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Licenses or Certifications Must have a valid Driver’s License and be able to maintain a safe driving history as defined by the Union County Vehicle Use Policy. Special Requirements This position may be subject to a fingerprint background check. Per NC General Statute 153A-94.2(b), applicants for a position of employment required to work with children in any capacity will be required to electronically submit fingerprints to the NC State Bureau of Investigation for a state and national criminal history record. Physical Demands Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, printers, telephones, pagers, cash registers, book chargers, copiers, answering machines, fax machines, etc. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Light Work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree. However, if the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work. Employees assigned to homebound must be physically able to drive a motor vehicle.
