Traffic Engineer

Traffic EngineerVHB's growing Tysons, VA team is seeking a Traffic Engineer to join our Transportation team. This role is ideal for a motivated mid-level engineer with a strong traffic engineering design background who is looking to expand their project management experience and grow into a future leadership role. The successful candidate will join a collaborative team of traffic engineers and transportation planners who value technical excellence, innovation, mentorship, and delivering solutions that improve mobility and safety for all users.This position will support a wide range of VDOT and public agency transportation projects throughout Northern Virginia, with a strong emphasis on traffic signal design, pedestrian safety improvements, pavement markings, and signing. The role offers an opportunity to contribute to high-profile statewide transportation contracts while working closely with senior leadership and developing long-term career growth within the team.ResponsibilitiesPrepare traffic signal design plans for VDOT and local agency transportation projectsSupport VDOT statewide and district transportation contracts, including across Northern VirginiaDevelop traffic engineering design packages including signing, pavement markings, and pedestrian safety improvementsAssist with quick-build traffic designSupport the design and implementation of multimodal transportation improvements that consider motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit users of all ages and abilitiesApply VDOT standards, specifications, and engineering best practices to transportation projectsCoordinate with internal multidisciplinary teams, clients, and agency staffAssist with project management responsibilities including task coordination, schedule management, and client communicationSupport public outreach activities and presentations for transportation projectsConduct traffic operational and safety studies for intersections and corridors as neededContribute to transportation policy, planning, and design guidance efforts as neededWork closely with senior leadership on opportunities for continued professional growth and increasing project responsibilitySkills and AttributesStrong technical background in traffic engineering designExperience with traffic signal design and VDOT transportation projectsKnowledge of pavement markings, signing, and pedestrian safety design principlesFamiliarity with VDOT standards and proceduresStrong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skillsAbility to manage multiple assignments and work both independently and collaborativelyStrong organizational and problem-solving skillsInterest in developing project management and leadership capabilitiesExperience presenting technical information to clients, agencies, or the public is beneficialTeam-oriented with a proactive and growth-focused mindsetQualificationsBachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field5+ years of professional experience in traffic engineeringProfessional Engineer (PE) license requiredExperience with VDOT and/or public agency transportation projects in Northern Virginia preferredStrong experience in traffic engineering design with emphasis on traffic signalsFamiliarity with MicroStation and traffic engineering design software preferredExperience with transportation planning or traffic studies is beneficialPTOE certification is a plusThe base salary range for this position is $100,000 to $140,000 for our DC and Virginia offices. This offer is determined based on a number of job-related factors including internal comparators, skills, education, training, credentials, experience, scope and complexity of role responsibilities and geographic location.
