Education & Licensing Education: Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from a school approved by the American Dental Association (ADA) or CODA-accredited. After graduation, dentists must pass national and state licensure examinations and maintain licensure through ongoing continuing education. Some dentists may specialize in orthodontics, periodontics, or oral and maxillofacial surgery, which require additional training and certification.
