POSITION SUMMARY
The Organizing Director of the MNA is the chief manager of all organizing campaigns and is appointed by the Executive Director. The Organizing Director directs most of their efforts to organizing new collective bargaining units and may assist in other efforts of the Organization as directed. The salary range for this position is $170,000 – 179,000.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director of Organizing is responsible for all activities and functions of the organizer-associate directors and assistant assigned to organizing. Communicates relevant issues to the Executive Director and other Division Directors of the Massachusetts Nurses Association.

• Establish and continuously improve a standardized organizing campaign model designed to maximize union growth, ensuring it incorporates effective strategies for overcoming employer anti-union efforts, legal and workplace challenges, and changing organizing conditions in healthcare and generally.
• Develops overall strategy to develop organizing leads throughout Massachusetts and New England in conjunction with the Northeast Nurses Association (NENA).
• Maintains contact with bargaining units to ensure that any residual positions or added units are included in the bargaining unit as applicable.
• Holds regular meetings of the organizing staff and attends MNA Director, Board of Directors and MNA staff meetings.
• Carries out the philosophy of the MNA which reflects the overall philosophy to organize Registered Nurses and Health Care Professionals and to promote the labor, economic and general welfare of its membership, current and future.
• Recommends policies/practices to improve overall operation of the Association to the Executive Director in order to maximize union growth.
• Implements changes/revisions in the Organizing Program, in conjunction with the Executive Director, which will improve its overall operation.
• Keeps abreast of current trends/issues and evaluates the impact of these trends on the Organizing Program and the Association, including changes coming out of the NLRB.
• Facilitates the activities of the Committees and Task Forces of the Board of Directors.
• Directs and supervises the organizing-associate directors and support staff assigned.
  • Recruits Organizers/Associate Directors.
  • Evaluates Organizers/Associate Directors according to responsibilities outlined in the position description.
  • Acts as a resource and provides consultation to program staff and Board of Directors.
  • Promotes professional growth and development of program staff. 
  • Assigns staff according to organizing needs.
  • Designates an individual who will act in his/her absence.
• Prepares an annual budget request in conjunction with the Executive Director for approval; monitors monthly expenses; keeps the Organizing Program expenses within the approved budget.
• Requests additional funds for unanticipated expenses from the Executive Director.
• Collaborates with other Divisions to achieve Organizing Division and Association goals.
• Submits a written annual report and monthly report to the Executive Director for the Board of Directors, and others as requested.
• Serves, when appropriate, on professional, governmental and other working groups outside the MNA, and when so designated by the Executive Director, acts as a representative of the MNA.
• Keeps abreast of trends/issues in organizing and evaluates the impact of these trends/issues on the Association.
• Carries out functions as delegated by the Executive Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Strong current knowledge of organizing, healthcare workers: nurses and non-nurse healthcare professionals in particular.
• Current experience in organizing, particularly health care organizing – minimum five (5) years.
• Administration/leadership experience required.
• Baccalaureate degree required; advanced degree preferred.
• Experience with membership organization preferred.
• Outstanding communications skills required.
