Charge Nurse - Lactation/Nutrition Consultant

About the Position The Prince George’s County Department of Health is seeking a Charge Nurse – Lactation/Nutrition Consultant (Community Health Nurse 3A) grade A24 within the Family Health Services Division (WIC Program). This advanced senior/lead‑level nursing role addresses the health care needs of diverse populations through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The position requires a Registered Nurse with formal training in nutrition science and current certification as an International Board‑Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). Responsibilities Provide advanced lactation care as an IBCLC while functioning as Charge Nurse to ensure appropriate triage, clinical decision‑making, and quality of care for breastfeeding participants. Coordinate and oversee local agency breastfeeding promotion and support activities, ensuring alignment with WIC program goals and clinical standards. Serve as the lead clinical resource for breastfeeding care, triaging referrals, prioritizing high‑risk cases, and coordinating services with appropriate staff. Exercise limited supervisory duties over subordinate staff. Plan and coordinate daily work activities of nurses, therapists, health aides, and clerical support staff. Coordinate nursing/medical care services for clients/patients with other agencies/programs. Provide orientation, on‑job training, and continuing education for supervised staff. Review and analyze patient records, ensuring accuracy and completeness, and take action if needed. Serve on departmental and interagency committees, task forces, commissions, and boards. Interpret departmental policies and procedures for staff. Assist staff in determining needed nursing and mental health care and resolving crisis situations. Assist in developing standards and procedures related to service provision and ensuring compliance. Triage new referrals to determine urgency and assign cases. Collect and summarize program data, and submit required reports to program leadership. Assist in budget development by providing narrative and statistical information. Perform other duties within the classification as needed. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or related health field from an accredited institution. Two (2) years of post‑licensure community health nursing experience. Valid Registered Nurse license in Maryland issued by the Maryland State Board of Nursing. Valid Class C driver’s license required when job duties call for motor vehicle operation. Valid CPR certification at time of appointment. Any equivalent combination of relevant training, education, and experience may also be considered. Preferred Qualifications Formal training in nutrition science and current IBCLC certification. Experience with EPIC Electronic Medical Records (EMR). Conditions of Employment Targeted license, driver’s license, and CPR certification requirements. Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate required proficiency. Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment. Pass pre‑employment checks, including reference checks, background investigations, and drug screenings. Be willing and able to serve as an essential employee, reporting during standard or non‑standard hours as needed.
