- You will serve as an engineering specialist and technical representative responsible for maintaining surveillance, reviewing, evaluating, and approving ship system and steam and electric plant testing aboard nuclear powered submarines.
- You will review, evaluate, and approve testing of safety and support systems including electrical/power generation, propulsion plant, seawater cooling, air, and life support systems.
- You will conduct and participate in the planning of nuclear submarine repair availabilities and support complex ship system testing activities.
- You will serve as the sole government representative on the HME-JTG, JPTG, or JTG-NN, taking required local approval actions for assigned ship system and test programs.
- You will perform technical review and local validation approval of system test program documents, including operating and casualty procedures.
- You will coordinate approvals required for performance of ship system and propulsion plant testing and authorize testing upon verification of satisfactory prerequisites.
- You will authorize performance of ship system and steam and electric plant testing and verify satisfactory test completion.
- You will review contractor and Design Yard proposed system test plans and specifications, resolve technical conflicts, and help resolve major ship system problems.
- You will attend test plan of the day meetings and concur in plant conditions, authorized tests, test briefings, installation of test equipment, and required training.
- You will ensure preparation for and conduct of ship system and propulsion plant test programs meet all technical and safety requirements.
- You will attend Nuclear JTG meetings, concur in non-reactor plant testing schedules, and remain on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for testing changes and unusual events.
- You will attend critiques following malfunctions, failures, or casualties to determine causes and corrective actions affecting ship systems or propulsion plant equipment.
- You will maintain personal knowledge of day-to-day ship system and propulsion plant testing progress and collaborate with Ship Coordinators on technical and programmatic issues.
- You will conduct onboard surveillance before and during propulsion plant testing, review test data, and concur in technical evaluations of testing problems.
- You will ensure systems are certified complete, prerequisites are satisfied, and proper briefings, dry runs, and engineering shift turnovers are completed before testing.
- You will participate in continuous training, prepare and present technical lectures, and maintain qualifications supporting ship system and propulsion plant testing.
- You will review and concur in test procedures, approve daily test schedules, identify tests affecting ship conditions, and stop testing whenever unsafe conditions exist.
- You will serve on the Ships Safety Council, approve procedures, prerequisite lists, and schedules affecting ship safety and watertight integrity, and stop unsafe operations.
- You will represent the Engineering Department by attending production and waterfront meetings, resolving technical issues, coordinating with contractor engineering personnel, and supporting repair availabilities.
- You will participate in the SUPSHIP surveillance program, review contractor documents, provide technical support, prepare correspondence, recommend technical manual revisions, and conduct availability planning and work package reviews.

- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
- Proven analytical/engineering skills and a proven ability to sucessfully work with technical personnel in the review of significant technical issues that affect their respective engineering discipline.
- Ability to apply and modify standard engineering practices and approaches in order to solve a variety of engineering and operational problems.

- Professional Engineering Series (08XX) - Degree: A professional engineering degree from an ABET-accredited college or university; OR a degree with curriculum in differential and integral calculus, with additional courses in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics; or electronics; OR
- Professional Engineering Series (08XX) - Substitution of Education/Experience: A combination of education and experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering; and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following: (a) professional registration, (b) evidence of successfully passing the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) examination; (c) successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified above; or (d) successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering technology or in an appropriate professional field, e.g., physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a degree in engineering provided that it included at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance.
