Overview MasTec Skillbridge Program Overview DOD SkillBridge Internships provide transitioning service members with valuable civilian work experience during their last six months of service, for up to 180 days. The program is open to all ranks and experience levels. Participants receive no additional compensation while in the program; they continue to receive military pay and benefits as active‑duty service members in a permissive TDY status. During the internship the member gains industry and organizational knowledge through daily business interactions and job assignments, all performed under direct supervision. The internship offers unpaid, non‑benefit‑eligible work in partnership with the DOW SkillBridge program. Position Summary The Field Engineer (I, II, or III) will inspect and monitor construction activities to ensure compliance with plans and specifications and to adhere to all applicable codes. The role requires notifying project management of significant issues and completing documentation to confirm satisfactory completion of inspection or test activities. The employee must develop a thorough understanding of the project scope and schedule relative to their assignment. Location & Travel Details This is an onsite DOD SkillBridge Internship located in Texas and Ohio. Responsibilities Safety Promote and comply with all company safety policies and procedures. Perform basic to moderate surveying to verify alignment, grade, and dimensions of roadway and structural elements. Prevent deficiencies through pre‑construction quality control inspections. Detect and address deficiencies in a timely and effective manner. Compliance Inspect and ensure the quality of daily construction activities on large‑scale wind and/or solar projects, including roads, environmental (SWPPP), excavations, concrete, rebar, substations, transmission lines, underground utilities, wind turbine installation, and solar system installation. Review tests and inspection reports, ensuring all required tests are completed and communicate failures to the Field Quality Manager. Ensure materials used meet approved submittals, purchase orders, and product data to comply with site specifications. Monitor and record all work scope, preparing a comprehensive daily report with measurements of daily quantities and resources utilized. Work closely with the Field Quality Manager and site management as the field representative to ensure construction complies with QA/QC requirements, scope, and standard operating procedures. Assist Logistics Management with receiving, inventory, and storage processes for materials arriving on site. Inspect work and establish punch lists to support the quality control process. Utilize construction management software for quality inspections, documentation, and data collection. Planning Verify that construction work conforms to design documents. Plan and conduct daily activities in an organized manner to ensure accurate QC and QA data collection. Interface with construction managers to maintain communication, report job progress, schedules, subcontractor performance, and coordinate field operations. Assist in compiling all necessary information for operations and maintenance manuals/files. Assist in managing and maintaining production and extra work authorization logs, identifying items and resolutions. Assist in preparing and distributing daily project updates to necessary parties. Assist in daily validation of calibrated tooling and determine calibration status of measuring and test equipment. Assist or participate in phase gate preparations or presentations. Support the Field Quality Manager with benchmarking processes and job book development and turnover. Training Coordinate, assist, and present support in safety policies and client requirements. Topics may include assisting, identifying, planning, shadowing, monitoring, compiling, management, and preparing reports and documentation per project requirements. Qualifications DoD SkillBridge Eligibility Has served at least 180 days on active duty. Is within 12 months of separation or retirement. Will receive an honorable discharge. Has taken any service TAPS/TGPS. Has received unit commander written authorization and approval to participate in the DoD SkillBridge Program prior to start of internship. Meets DoD SkillBridge Qualifications as per DoDI 1322.29. Work Experience and Education Prior experience related to the position. Associate or bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil, Mechanical Engineering, or related field is a plus. Prior experience or knowledge in construction, power delivery, or heavy civil is helpful but not required. Must be capable of completing and passing the local or state certified SWPPP inspector program and have working knowledge of the SWPPP project management plan. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint, Word, Excel). Deep understanding of construction safety protocols and compliance, with a track record of working safely. Advanced oral, written, and communication skills; works well with diverse groups. Work Environment & Physical Requirements Site work involves hazards or physical risks that require basic safety precautions. May involve moderate exposure to extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Requires physical work that includes climbing stairs and ladders frequently.
