Program Coordinator

Salary Classification: Part-Time, Hourly Woodlands Garden is looking for an independently driven and creative thinker to fill the position of Program Coordinator. As a small nonprofit organization, Woodlands Garden’s mission is to preserve a woodland garden as an urban sanctuary to educate and engage the community in the natural world. By building on a generous gift from the family of Chet and Gene Morse, Woodlands provides respite from urban bustle in Decatur, GA, inviting visitors to appreciate its cultivated and natural beauty. This hands-on coordinator position is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Garden’s adult and youth education programs, including overseeing the planning, implementation, and evaluation of all programs concurrent with the development of a yearly schedule of educational events and the development of curricula and supporting materials for our youth education program. Additional duties include managing partnerships and collaborations related to all educational programming and developing and tracking an annual operating plan and budget. Duties will include the following Conceptualize, plan, coordinate and implement a schedule of educational programming for all ages featuring offerings that align with the Garden's mission and connect to the seasons of the greenspace Build upon past program offerings while developing new opportunities with a focus on Research and propose new program ideas and potential partners Engage school, camp and other groups by developing curriculum unique to Woodlands Collaborate with staff, volunteers, and visitors of all ages and abilities Contribute to the production of the Garden’s publications, including the e-newsletter, Decatur Focus, and other publications Supply content for social media, website, and publicity articles including press releases Recruit program volunteers and train them on volunteer protocol Schedule adult education speakers for lectures and workshops Plan and coordinate monthly or quarterly garden tours Help to teach classes/workshops or coordinate other experts to lead Field visitor inquires as needed Youth Education Schedule school and camp group visits and/or coordinate volunteers Organize, train, and manage our youth education volunteers Order supplies as needed Plan and prepare curriculum-based activities and lessons Development/Board Support Coordinate and lead Program and Education Committee Maintain consistent communication with Board Liaison on Committee Prepare bi-monthly Board Report including metrics and details on past and upcoming programming and events Prepare end-of-year report on all educational activities Desired qualifications The position is intended for those with an existing knowledge of executing a program from beginning to end and interest in furthering this skillset. Computer savvy skills appreciated. Preferred characteristics of Program Coordinator include: excellent listening skills, attention to detail, willingness to learn, and excitement to collaborate with others. Priority will be placed on applicants with a degree focused on Horticulture, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Education, or similar fields. Education/Qualifications A minimum of a bachelor’s degree with studies in the area of horticulture, natural science, public garden administration, and/or education preferred. Knowledge of environmental education and informal education. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the natural sciences. Work experience in the areas of non-profits and education is desirable, in particular, previous experience at a botanic garden, arboretum, or museum though not required. Personal Qualities and Skills This position requires a professional manner, excellent interpersonal communication (both written and verbal), organizational ability, and administrative skills. Preferred candidates will have working knowledge of curriculum development, of Canva and/or other design platforms, and Google web apps. Candidates must be able to work independently and as a team player. The job requires occasional heavy lifting of up to 50 pounds. Work Schedule This is a part-time, 20/hr a week position. Office hours are flexible Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 3:30pm. It requires occasional evening/weekend work.
