The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) within the Environmental Health & Safety Group is seeking an experienced Nurse Practitioner to provide comprehensive occupational and preventive healthcare services to APL staff. This role functions at the provider level, delivering independent assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and regulatory oversight in collaboration with the Medical Director, Medical Review Officer (MRO), and Occupational Health nursing team. Working collaboratively with occupational health nurses, EHS professionals, and external healthcare providers, you will provide medical expertise across a broad range of occupational health programs.

Occupational Clinical Care
- Conduct comprehensive occupational health evaluations, including DOT exams (FMCSA-certified Medical Examiner required), pre-placement assessments, firefighter and safety-sensitive exams, and specialized evaluations (e.g., ordnance, biological, field/at-sea).
- Diagnose and manage occupational injuries and illnesses, providing urgent and episodic care as needed.
- Prescribe medications, deliver therapeutic interventions, and coordinate specialty referrals.
- Interpret diagnostic testing results from laboratory tests, EKGs, pulmonary function tests, audiograms, and vision assessments.
- Perform fitness-for-duty evaluations and reproductive hazard assessments, ensuring appropriate follow-up and referrals.
Case Management & Return-to-Work
- Evaluate, treat, and monitor work-related injuries and illnesses, ensuring appropriate referrals and supporting timely return-to-work outcomes.
- Promote early intervention and stay-at-work strategies to optimize recovery and reduce lost work time.
- Develop and oversee individualized return-to-work plans and work restriction recommendations.
- Manage workers' compensation cases, including coordination with external providers and ongoing case review.
- Partner with the Accommodations Coordinator to provide medical guidance for workplace accommodation requests and support ADA-compliant implementation.
Occupational Health Programs
- Lead preventive health initiatives including travel medicine, immunotherapy, immunizations, and early musculoskeletal intervention programs.
- Oversee medical surveillance programs, including respiratory protection, hearing conservation, and vision/laser safety.
- Manage drug and alcohol testing programs.
- Provide employee health education and support workplace safety and wellness initiatives.
- Assess workplace hazards and participate in accident investigations to support continuous improvement.
Compliance & Program Support
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, HIPAA, and all applicable occupational health regulations.
- Maintain required regulatory documentation and recordkeeping.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant medical documentation.
- Participate in annual policy and SOP reviews.
- Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and support ongoing program development.
Qualifications

- Hold a Master's or Doctoral degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
- Possess an active Maryland APRN license (or Compact eligibility) and national Nurse Practitioner certification.
- Maintain current certification through the FMCSA National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.
- Bring at least 5+ years of clinical practice experience in Occupational Health, Emergency Medicine, Critical Care, or a closely related field.
- Have demonstrated experience in occupational injury evaluation, treatment, and case management.
- Possess working knowledge of OSHA regulations; workplace hazards (biologic, chemical, physical, radiologic); Workers' Compensation statutes; and fitnessforduty assessment principles.
- Exhibit strong clinical judgment and the ability to make independent, evidencebased decisions.
- Have demonstrated ability to partner effectively with occupational health nursing staff in a collaborative, team-based care model, fostering mutual respect, shared clinical decision-making, and coordinated delivery of occupational health services.
- Are proficient with Electronic Health Records and standard office software.
- Hold current CPR/BLS certification.
- Are able to obtain a Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
