Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN (Registered Nurse) Specialty: Surgical Acute - Medical Surgical Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum 1 year License: Active state nursing license required Certifications: BLS (AHA) required Must-Have: - Post-operative care experience - Critical thinking skills - Good bedside manner - Team player Description: The unit has 63 beds, including 49 private rooms and 9 observation beds. Nurse-patient ratios are 4-5 patients per RN during the day and 5-6 patients per RN at night. Ratios may increase to 1:6 during the day and 1:7 at night if necessary. Common diagnoses include post-operative surgical cases, trauma, overflow medical patients, and a variety of care tasks such as dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, drains, NGs, central lines, and TPN. Nurses are not required to titrate drips, with the exception of Heparin. There is a Charge Nurse and a House Supervisor available on each shift, with Charge Nurses not taking patient assignments. Patient Care Technicians assist with patient care, with ratios of 7-10 patients per PCT during the day and 10-15 patients per PCT at night. Duties include assisting with vitals, accu checks, activities of daily living, turning, and ambulation. Respiratory therapy equipment is managed by RT, while nurses handle inhalers and can place patients on CPAP. There are telemetry and monitor techs available; nurses are not required to read their own strips. Shifts are from 0700-1930 for days and 1930-0730 for nights. Block scheduling may be considered upon approval. Weekend work is required every other weekend, including Saturday and Sunday. There is a requirement for holiday shifts, and scheduling rotates every other holiday. Travelers are the first to float to units with the same level of experience. If an ICU RN floats to a general unit, they will take a team of 3 patients. Scrubs can be of any color. Unit-specific orientation consists of 2 shifts with a preceptor, plus one shift for training and professional orientation.
