BATTALION CHIEF

Fire Battalion Chief

Performs a variety of highly technical and responsible activities that requires a great deal of independent judgment and initiative. Performs a variety of administrative, supervisory and technical work in the supervision and administration of fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, and fire prevention activities, as well as emergency and non-emergency services to the public. Works under the general supervision of the Fire Chief, or assigned designee.

This position is considered an emergency/disaster position. During emergency conditions, all City employees are automatically considered emergency service workers. City employees are subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation, which requires that the employee be ready, willing, and able to report to work during emergencies and/or disasters of any kind, notwithstanding any other commitments the employee may have and be able perform emergency services duties, as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must possess bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Homeland Security, Emergency Medical Services or a closely related field, from an accredited institution or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Five (5) or more years of experience, with three (3) years as a Fire Lieutenant capable of fulfilling Battalion Chief responsibilities or equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience.

Must possess, valid Florida Driver's License with Emergency Vehicle Operator's Course (EVOC) certificate or equivalent.

Must possess and maintain a certificate Florida State Minimum Standards Certification as a Firefighter in accordance with F.S. 633.412.

Must hold current certification and licensing as Paramedic in accordance with State of Florida, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, Florida Administrative 64J-1.009.

Autonomous Paramedic Status.

Must possess and maintain Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association.

State of Florida Firefighter II Certificate of Compliance.

State of Florida Fire Officer II.

Fire Officer Development Academy.

Have completed 240 hours of supervised ride up as Battalion training and have been signed off in the Supervisory/Battalion Chief Task Book (to be achieved after completion of two years as company officer), or equivalent training.

Signed off to ride-up in the Battalion Chief role by the Fire Chief, or equivalent.

Must comply with Department physical evaluation requirements.

Employees in this position are required to pass National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS-700 within 30 days of employment: ICS-100 and ICS-200 or ICS 220 within 90 days of employment, or from the date of taking the position and ICS-300 and ICS-400 within 180 days of employment, or from the date of taking the position. There may be additional NIMS required, which will be scheduled by your supervisor.

Meet all pre-employment requirements in accordance with state and department standards.

Preference given to employees employed by the Maitland Fire Rescue Department.

Extensive knowledge of modern fire suppression and prevention and emergency medical services principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment. Considerable knowledge of current training standards involved in firefighting and other related activities.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions; effectively give and receive verbal and written instructions.

Considerable knowledge of current federal, state, and local laws regarding occupational safety and health relating to the fire service work environment.

Extensive working knowledge of emergency medical practices including but not limited to: Basic (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) functions, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and specialized rescue, extrication, disentanglement and patient packaging/transport by ground or air.

Considerable knowledge of managerial practices with understanding of management theories, functions, quality improvement practices and municipal budgeting practices.

Demonstrate considerable awareness and perception skills with ability to effectively delineate simple-to-complex issues identify root causes and affect change to remedy or improve such.

Demonstrate considerable ability to develop programs, with minimal supervision, and effectively communicate the needs of the EMS and overall department training and safety through short, medium and long range planning.

Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work and meet established goals/objectives within given timeframes, including crisis situations under compressed timeframes.

Maintain knowledge of Maitland Fire Rescue Department Rules and Regulations and Standard Operating Guidelines.

Maintain physical fitness level as defined by department program. Maintain calm in stressful situations.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the public.
