The Executive Director of Engagement and Annual Giving is a senior leader within Wharton External Affairs responsible for setting and executing a comprehensive, integrated strategy for communications, alumni engagement, and annual giving in support of the School’s philanthropic and engagement priorities. Reporting to the Sr Exec Dir of Development, this role provides strategic direction across Annual Giving, Alumni Relations, and Advancement Communications to strengthen donor engagement, deepen alumni connection, expand broad-based participation, and grow annual fund revenue.
This position oversees teams responsible for strategic communications, alumni engagement, and annual fund initiatives, aligning messaging, outreach, and engagement opportunities across the full donor lifecycle, from identification and cultivation through solicitation and stewardship. The Executive Director partners closely with senior leaders across External Affairs, Wharton leadership, and Penn Development and Alumni Relations to ensure that communications, alumni engagement strategies, and annual giving efforts are coordinated, data-informed, and effectively advance institutional priorities. The role requires a forward-thinking, collaborative leader who can integrate functions, optimize performance, and build innovative programs that deepen alumni connection and expand philanthropic support.

Job Description

Job Responsibilities

• Strategic leadership: Establish an integrated vision and operational framework across communications, alumni affairs, and annual fund that aligns messaging, engagement, and solicitation strategies to advance Wharton’s philanthropic priorities and strengthen alumni affinity..
• Integrated communications and engagement strategy: Oversee the development and execution of comprehensive, multi-channel communications, alumni engagement programs, and annual giving campaigns that drive participation, enhance the donor experience, and elevate the School’s case for support.
• Senior Leader Collaboration: Collaborate with other senior leaders to develop and execute coordinated strategies that span the full donor life-cycle and ensure alignment of goals, resources, and performance metrics
• Institutional partnership and alignment: Build and sustain strategic relationships with academic and administrative leadership, Wharton Marketing and Communications, and Penn Development and Alumni Relations to ensure consistency of messaging and effective integration of engagement and fundraising initiatives.
• Portfolio Ownership: Manage a focused portfolio of up to 25 leadership annual giving donors.
• Leadership & People Management: Leads and supports direct reports through coaching, regular feedback, goal-setting, and day-to-day guidance. Invests in their growth, helps remove obstacles, and fosters a positive, inclusive, and high-performing environment. Holds individuals accountable to expectations and standards while ensuring fairness, clarity, and follow-through.

Qualifications

• Master of Science, Master of Arts, and 7 to 10 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Demonstrated expertise in advancement strategy
• Proven strategic leadership and organizational management skills
• Strong knowledge of annual giving and broad-based fundraising practices
• Exceptional communication and messaging expertise
• Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships and influence senior stakeholders

Salary offers are made based on the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, and in alignment with salary ranges based on external market data for the job’s level.
