Specimen Processing Technician

Pay Range: $16.20hr - $21.00hr


Job Overview:


The Specimen Processing Technician I is responsible for general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department. Functions performed may include A-station, presort, pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory, imaging/microfilming, centrifugation, and aliquoting. All functions must be performed accurately and in a timely manner. The position requires strong organizational skills, data entry proficiency, and the ability to adapt to daily compliance regulations and varying shift demands in a production-oriented biohazard environment.


Responsibilities:

• Functions performed may include, but are not limited to, A-station, presort, pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory, imaging/microfilming, centrifugation, and aliquoting. All functions must be performed with confidence, accuracy, and in a timely manner. The role is complex and requires good organizational skills, as well as the ability to learn and understand specimen types related to tests ordered by clients. The candidate must have the ability to learn and understand compliance regulations related to test ordering, which may change on a daily basis. This position is critical to quality for customer satisfaction and requires flexibility to handle changing demands.
• The majority of work occurs on the night shift; however, based on staffing needs, weekend, holiday, on-call, and overtime availability is required.
• The department operates as a production environment with an emphasis on productivity/quality standards and departmental completion times. The role requires working in a biohazard environment while practicing proper safety habits. The candidate will adhere to core values, safety policies, and compliance procedures, maintain a neat and clean work area, communicate effectively with all levels of staff, demonstrate strong interpersonal skills that foster a positive environment, and show flexibility and adaptability to change.

Education:

• High School diploma or equivalent.

Required Knowledge:

• Basic understanding of computers, with preferred knowledge of laboratory testing and/or laboratory specimen processing.

Work Experience:

• No prior experience required, but previous laboratory experience is preferred.
• A medical background, including medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory, is preferred.
• Previous experience in a hospital laboratory or a production environment is a plus.
• A data entry background with the ability to enter 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour is required.

• Ability to stand for long periods of time.
• Ability to lift 20 pounds.
