Project Overview Our customer is a utility in central Arizona looking to add 2000MW of pumped energy storage to its storage capacity to meet growing demand on its network. We are building a high performing team to deliver this complex EPC heavy civil project and looking for motivated, hands‑on, collaborative innovators, doers, and problem solvers. The project will involve the use of the existing Apache lake as the lower reservoir and creation of an upper reservoir by building dams in the Alchesay Canon, the reservoirs will be connected by underground waterways tunneled into the rock, channeling water down the ~1,200ft drop between the two reservoirs. The project scope includes significant access roads work development, construction of the upper reservoir with dams and an overflow spillway, underground tunnel waterways in challenging geological and hydrogeological conditions, upper and lower reservoir inlet/outlet structures, hydromechanical equipment, an underground powerhouse, and surface site facilities and buildings. The Electrical scope includes a 500kV system comprising of incoming power lines, aboveground takeoff structures, 500 kV cables routed via underground tunnels, 500 kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substation and Generator Step Up (GSU) transformers inside a cavern as well as other BOP electrical equipment (medium voltage transformers, medium voltage switchgear, distribution transformers, low voltage switchgear and panelboards). Job Summary The Senior Electrical Engineer is responsible for the engineering, coordination, and technical oversight of powerhouse and balance of plant electrical systems for the Salt River Project Pumped Storage Project (SRPSP). The role supports EPC execution through design development, interface management, constructability, and construction/commissioning support for a large, pumped storage facility comprising underground powerhouse, shafts, tunnels, intake/outlet works, and surface facilities, in accordance with SRP requirements, applicable codes, and Bechtel engineering procedures. A key part of this role is collaboration with JV partner, Design consultant and the Customer. The Senior Electrical Engineer shall work with the team to establish regular meetings with design consultant and other external stakeholders as required and reporting cycles for managing, coordinating, and assuring the design. The position is based at our design subcontractor offices in Edmonton, Canada with regular attendance at the central design office in Phoenix, Arizona. During construction, the role may transfer to site or require regular site attendance. Major Responsibilities Perform and review conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design for SRPSP BOP electrical systems, including: Medium and Low Voltage distribution within the underground powerhouse and plant facilities Unit auxiliary systems, station service power, black start and emergency power provisions Grounding, bonding, and lightning protection for underground and surface facilities Powerhouse, access tunnel, and cavern lighting (normal, emergency, maintenance) Cable tray, conduit, shaft, and tunnel routing systems, including segregation and installation constraints Electrical systems supporting cranes, hoists, gates, valves, drainage, dewatering, ventilation, HVAC, and other BOP equipment This role will include working with the Design Subcontractor and discharging responsibilities as set out in the Management of Third‑Party Engineering, 10G-M41-00013 as part of the BTJV Engineering team. Develop and check electrical design criteria, load lists, calculations, single line diagrams, layouts, specifications, and data sheets consistent with SRPSP operational, reliability, and safety requirements. Coordinate electrical designs with Civil / Geotechnical (underground caverns, shafts, tunnels, powerhouse layout), Mechanical (turbine generator auxiliaries, pump motor auxiliaries, gates, HVAC), Control Systems / I&C (auxiliaries control, power/controls segregation, UPS interfaces) and Plant Design and Constructability. Interface with OEMs (turbine generator supplier, auxiliary equipment vendors) for electrical integration into SRPSP powerhouse systems. Support and management of electrical interfaces between: Powerhouse and switchyard / transmission tie‑in, Underground works and surface facilities and Permanent and temporary construction power. Provide Construction & Commissioning Support during execution including response to RFIs, field change evaluations, etc. Support construction sequencing, installation constraints, and temporary power planning for underground works. Participate in testing, energization, and commissioning support, including review of test procedures, energization and turnover sequencing for station service and auxiliaries. Support SRP operations readiness and commissioning teams. Review and approve electrical deliverables to ensure compliance with SRP technical requirements, project specifications and design criteria, applicable IEC/IEEE/NEC/IS/EN codes. Participate in design reviews, constructability reviews, safety in design workshops, and HAZID/HAZOP reviews, with focus on underground powerhouse risks. Coordinate and manage the review of Electrical deliverables produced by design consultant, including schedules, reports, critical issues, risks and providing feedback to Engineering Manager. Chair discipline specific meetings, recording actions. Represent the client in technical meetings and Value Engineering analysis. Provide guidance and ensure quality of design by independent engineering firms carrying out detailed design, including compliance with customer requirements, local design guidelines and codes, international codes and standards. Actively support constructability and execution in underground environments, and contribute directly to safe, reliable commissioning and turnover of SRPSP. Apply safety in design principles appropriate for underground pumped storage facilities (fire, egress, arc flash, electrical separation). Education and Experience Requirements University/College graduate with BS (or Master's degree) in Electrical Engineering or equivalent from a recognized Institute with an overall experience of 10 years. Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in electrical engineering for hydropower, pumped storage, or large power/infrastructure projects and demonstrated experience supporting powerhouse or BOP electrical systems on at least one medium to large scale hydropower / pumped storage project. Required Knowledge and Skills Professional/Chartered Engineer preferred. Knowledge of current computer applications for electrical engineering and design including appropriate knowledge of CAD e.g., AutoCAD, MS Word and Excel for managing design reviews. Broad knowledge of US government compliance standards. Strong knowledge of pumped storage / hydropower auxiliary and BOP electrical systems. Able to communicate technical information in writing and orally; to interrelate effectively with individuals and teams and have presentation skills. Able to work within a multi‑disciplinary, multi‑cultural team and manage challenging multi‑cultural relationships across a range of entities. Self‑driven and able to plan and execute work without direct supervision from senior management and/or peers. Flexible and able to adapt to working in a demanding environment, including traveling and working remotely if/when required. Familiarity with EPC execution, engineering workflows, and document control systems. Experience supporting commissioning and handover to Owner operations. Exposure to lenders' technical advisor or independent engineers. Actively support constructability and execution in underground environments, and contribute directly to safe, reliable commissioning and turnover of SRPSP.
