Objective: Jorgensen's business is unique. In order to provide prospective candidates some context regarding our business, the following brief narrative outlines an example of a typical Project Engineer's day - responsible for a roadway/highway operations and maintenance comprehensive multi-year contract. The goal of the narrative is to give PE candidates a perspective of typical PE responsibilities and daily tasks. There are many responsibilities not included in the narrative below, however the example may provide a baseline.
Critical Skills: Successful Jorgensen Project Engineer's typically exhibit the following fundamental skills.
Critically well Organized: The contract operations involve a huge range and array of activities. Successful PEs have established intrinsic organizing skills to process large volumes of information and quickly store catalog and retrieve data, emails, pictures, archive specifications, etc.
Autonomous and Independent: Jorgensen hires managers and trusts their abilities and decision making. A PE will typically be working autonomously at a local project office. The PE will have peripheral support in training, HR, safety, and engineering, however the day-to-day engineering tasks will be managed by the PE. The PE will be expected to understand and support corporate guidelines and policies, but will have flexibility to manage in their own style.
A True Leader: Jorgensen's successful project engineer is a true leader that believes in ownership and accountability. The PE thrives on developing their own team, motivating their staff and creating a culture of excellence. The PE knows the importance of delegation and inspiring their staff to make good decisions. Most importantly, the PE believes they are fundamental responsible to make all their subordinates successful.
Customer Service/Responsiveness: Jorgensen's successful project engineer understands the true value of direct client and customer relationships. The PE is highly responsive to the clients needs and requests. The PE is a strong communicator under any platform (f2f, digital, voice, etc.). The PE has a vested interested and belief to make their client/customer successful.
A Jorgensen PE Day begins…
05:30 - 06:30AM: You arrive to Field Ops office or Maintenance yard, you will be typically issued a company truck that will be authorized for overnight residence parking. Field operations office/maintenance yard is a single story commercial complex, simple office finishes attached to an open indoor warehouse. Outside the field operations office is an enclosed "lite construction yard" housing trucks, earthmoving equipment, highway materials and earthworks.
06:30 - 07:00AM: You rapidly check emails for critical manager requests of the day, casual lite breakfast with a team member needing 1-on-1 supervision/mentorship. You put on your safety boots and strap on your safety glasses. The team member is a technician and had been pressing you for a promotion to become a Maintenance Technician III after receiving his CDL A endorsement.
07:00AM: You visit with your project manager and discuss all crew assignments, work locations, and safety/MOT/lane closure requirements. You get an ops debrief from any night-shift work, discuss open emergencies. Your staff will usually be composed of the following
Road service patrols
Roadway debris pickup crews
Equipment/earthworks repair crews
Skilled roadway maintenance repair crew
Lighting/electricians
Guardrail repair crews
Traffic Control/MOT crews
Emergency incident responders (traffic accidents)
Bridge/structure repair crews
Concrete finishing crews
07:30AM: You have individual discussions with crew technicians, motivate individual technicians career paths, inspire improvement on efficiency/performance, HR problems, disciplinary actions, and equipment problems.
08:00AM: random calls from corporate office to discuss operational safety infractions and recommendations for improvement, virtual meeting to discuss projects financial performance and your recommendations for financial projections.
09:30AM: You have a meeting with your direct Client (the contract manager), drive to client's office, 20-45minutes from. Dress is business casual. Meeting location is a government building. You come prepared with laptop for impromptu review of work actions, and open urgent roadway failures. You may discuss items like:
Open potholes causing motorists to call DOT directly and your plans to correct
Safety repairs: guardrail damages, attenuator damages, lighting outages
Report compliance submittals, monthly accomplishment data
Status of roadside mowing operations
Overall plans for the following month
Active traffic incidents and emergency response crew status
10:30AM: You have a mid-morning check in with project manager, reschedule some field jobs (lack of proper materials), discuss traffic emergencies and overall status of the current day's jobs
11:00AM: Catch up on missed calls from clients, vendors, employees, corporate office
11:30AM: You have a scheduled lunch with a significant vendor/partner to negotiate a subcontractor agreement addenda and pricing schedules. Subcontractor needs to increase the current pricing 20% beyond your budget allowances. The subcontractor is a quality partner.
1:00PM: You head straight, unannounced, from the lunch directly into the field to your guardrail repair crew working alongside roadway shoulder of an interstate highway. You informally inspect the traffic control arrangement and notice a few items that should be corrected. You speak with the crew leader, walk the job briefly, drop the crew off cold drinks and head back to the office
1:43PM: You take a call from your project manager that needs an interpretation on a specification for the repair of a drainage headwall. You're driving on the interstate, take the nearest exit and park at a McDonalds. You pair your laptop to the wifi and look for the specification on the DOT's website. You find the exact dimension of the headwall, verify the reinforcing steel arrangement and concrete strength requirements. You call your ops manager back and explain to him the required dimensions. You additionally email him the specification-drawing directly.
2PM: You drive back to your office. Corporate HR schedules a virtual meeting to discuss a past incident with an employee involved in an at-fault driving incident. The discussion is confidential and you determine, with your manager, whether to attempt to rehabilitate the employee's behavior or move towards termination.
2:30PM: You work privately in your office planning a new maintenance schedule for the next month. You review analysis of data that shows where your assets are underperforming. You consider your budget overages and shortages. You make quick calls to your project manager to generate more opinions.
3:24PM: The project field crews are arriving back in yard. You do more informal vehicle checks, have some impromptu conversations with up-and-coming technicians. You make a point to go speak with your equipment/earthworks crew – they did a tremendous job on a very difficult work order assigned to them earlier in the week.
4:00PM. You debrief the day with the project manager and discuss tomorrow's plans. You discuss the night crew's schedule and make sure that all the subcontractor partners have been scheduled for the evening.
4:49PM: There is a sudden traffic emergency on the road causing massive traffic back-up. Your emergency crews were already mobilized and on scene starting to set-up temporary traffic control for fire-rescue. Coincidently the DOT District Engineer is in the traffic jam and calls their staff to figure out what's going on. Your direct DOT project manager calls you immediately and asks what your crews are doing for the emergency response.
5:13PM: You get back in your work truck and head home for the evening. You spend most the ride talking with your emergency crews that are on-scene at the traffic incident. You make a few calls back to your Client project manager and provide assurances of your emergency crew's plans for clearing the incident.
9:37PM (TEXT): Earlier you asked the project manager to have the night crew leader text you with some assurances that the night operation was moving as scheduled.
