GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Operates all types of City owned heavy equipment and other automotive equipment and performs a variety of manual tasks in connection with such operation; Does related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation and care of complex equipment in the performance of assigned tasks. The Motor Equipment Operator is assigned to operate any and all pieces of heavy construction equipment owned by the City. An employee in this class is also required to perform recurring manual duties related to the operation of the equipment. Work is usually performed under direct supervision. Supervision may be exercised over employees on assigned projects.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative Only)

• Operates a truck in connection with the hauling of material for road construction and repair.
• Operates a large vehicle in collection of trash, rubbish and garbage.
• Operates a snow plow with sander and other related snow removal equipment such as a snow blower.
• Services assigned vehicle and maintains it in clean condition.
• When assigned, may perform tasks required of any departmental employee.
• Performs a variety of manual tasks, as assigned, such as, but not limited to constructing, cleaning and repairing catch basins, sewers, water mains, valves, streets, curbing and other city property, hand digging and grading and placing blacktop.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Good knowledge of the operation of trucks, tractors and all other types of automotive equipment such as front loaders, sweepers, sewer cleaners, backhoes, and tandem trucks; Good knowledge of the geography of the area; Ability to understand and carry out any oral and written instructions; Mechanical aptitude; Willingness to respond to emergencies; Dependability.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma AND one year of experience in the operation of automotive equipment. Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License required at time of appointment and throughout tenure.
