Job Description

This role supports a concrete stone manufacturing operation by setting up, monitoring, and maintaining production machinery to ensure consistent product quality and safe, efficient output. You will work with a variety of equipment, assist with material handling, and contribute to a collaborative, hands-on production environment.

Responsibilities

• Adjust production machinery and related processes to meet established quality standards.

• Monitor the operation of machines, batchers, mixers, buckets, conveyors, loaders, unloaders, depalleters, cubers, kilns, and other nearby equipment to detect and report malfunctions.

• Maintain, adjust, and perform minor repairs on machines and associated equipment to keep production running smoothly.

• Operate a forklift around the manufacturing plant after receiving appropriate training, if not already experienced.

• Handle materials such as concrete products and components safely and efficiently throughout the production process.

• Assist with general labor tasks including loading, unloading, picking, packing, and palletizing products as needed.

• Support inventory-related tasks by moving and staging materials and finished products in designated areas.

• Follow all safety procedures, including the use of required personal protective equipment, and immediately report any unsafe conditions or incidents.

• Work effectively with a small team on shift, communicating clearly to coordinate work and break times.

• Maintain reliable attendance and arrive on time for scheduled shifts to support continuous production.

• Lift and move heavy materials, up to and above 60 pounds, as part of daily duties.

• Keep work areas clean and organized, contributing to a safe and efficient production environment.

Essential Skills

• At least 6 months of experience in manufacturing, construction, or general labor.

• Ability to lift 60+ pounds repeatedly and safely throughout the shift.

• Consistent attendance and the ability to arrive on time for all scheduled shifts.

• Experience with concrete, construction, landscaping, farm work, or similar labor-intensive environments.

• General production or manufacturing experience, including tasks such as loading, picking, packing, and inventory support.

• Ability to operate or learn to operate forklifts and pallet jacks in a manufacturing setting.

• Basic mechanical aptitude to adjust and perform minor repairs on production machinery and equipment.

• Comfort working in hot, dirty, and loud environments while maintaining focus on safety and quality.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Previous experience in concrete production, precast, or stone manufacturing environments.

• Experience with machine operation, including batchers, mixers, conveyors, or similar equipment.

• Familiarity with material handling equipment such as forklifts and pallet jacks.

• Ability to work flexible hours in a “leave when the job is done” environment.

• Strong teamwork and communication skills to coordinate tasks and breaks with coworkers.

Work Environment

This role is based in a concrete stone manufacturing facility that produces products such as retaining walls for landscaping projects. The environment is hot, dirty, and loud, especially in the summer, and can remain warm in the winter due to drying cement precast inside the building. You work alongside approximately five other employees per shift in a laid-back, production-focused culture where communication and teamwork are important. The schedule is primarily a first shift from 5:00 a.m. to approximately 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with an end time that depends on when the work is completed. Shifts are kept under 12 hours, but you should not always expect a standard 8-hour day. Breaks include a 30-minute lunch and additional breaks that the team coordinates together rather than at fixed times. You will work around heavy machinery such as mixers, conveyors, kilns, and material handling equipment. The dress code requires steel-toed boots, jeans, and a work shirt, along with a high-visibility shirt or vest and a hard hat, all of which you must have before starting. The company provides ear plugs and safety glasses to support hearing and eye protection in the noisy, industrial environment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Hiawatha, IA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
