The RN provides care to these patients via the utilization of the nursing process, nursing trends, technology, financial, and human resources. Essential functions include performing all responsibilities and duties required by the unit as specific to the scope of service. The RN implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice. Maintaining up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided is essential to assure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team. The RN completes an initial assessment upon patient admission and develops an appropriate plan of care in accordance with unit standards. This plan is based on patient and family needs. The RN implements the plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures. The plan of care is modified based on continuous evaluation. The RN takes responsibility for patient and employee safety by reporting and/or correcting safety hazards and incidents. Communication with others directly and in private when necessary to resolve issues is required. The RN offers constructive feedback to assist in the professional development of peers. Conferring with colleagues to expand knowledge base is encouraged. Identifying personal learning needs and taking initiative to begin appropriate solutions is expected. Fulfilling all requirements of departmental competencies is mandatory. Department specific job functions include ensuring good communication with patients and families. This is achieved by utilizing meaningful hourly rounding, bedside shift report, and whiteboards. The RN works with the critical care team for ICU lite patients and with hospitalists for advanced care patients.
